Its a solid squad already, they sign who they are still rumoured to be talking to and they will hit the ground running big time. Van Stratton will be immense.

Sydney had a solid squad at the start of the season as well, and look at them now.

THE longest manhunt since Tommy Lee Jones stalked Harrison Ford in The Fugitive is over, with Gold Coast United finally netting Socceroos star Jason Culina.

Months of painstaking groundwork have, according to Dutch sources, paid off, with the midfielder agreeing to personal terms with United's billionaire owner Clive Palmer.

It's understood that an in-principle agreement between United and the coveted midfielder is now in place, which will ensure he becomes the first front-line Australian international to return to the A-League in the four years since its inception.

United officials are now awaiting written confirmation that Culina is on his way, with head coach Miron Bleiberg declining to comment yesterday on landing the marquee man who will be his captain in 2009-2010.

However, a reliable Dutch source close to Culina's club PSV Eindhoven said: "Jason has made up his mind and told Gold Coast he is coming to join them.

"They might not have a signed contract in front of them yet but they will soon."

Culina will earn just over half in Australia -- an estimated $3.3 million over three seasons -- to what's on offer in the Netherlands.

But it's believed he has been seduced by the challenge of lifting the level of the A-League and the lifestyle lures for his wife and young family as he puts job satisfaction over the creed of need.

The source added: "Jason wants to show the Australian people how good he is -- and he knows it's a case of now or never in terms of coming home to play."

However, the PSV Eindhoven ace's father and advisor Branko Culina was more circumspect last night, saying a deal was close but not yet complete.

PSV are tonight due to make one last-ditch bid to change the mind of the World Cup stalwart, who at 28, is about to show that the pipeline whisking off Australia's best and brightest can also flow the other way.

After 10 years in Europe -- at Ajax, FC Twente and Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, where he has been since 2005 -- Culina has opted to stand up against the cynics by pinning his faith in a competition that some believe is not worthy of him.

"Jason is aware what some people might think about him contemplating returning," said Branko Culina.

"He knows they think it would be a mistake and would show a lack of ambition on his behalf.

"But he doesn't care what people think.

"He wants to do what's best for him, and his heart is back home."

if 3.3mil is only half of what he had in holland he must have got a handy pay increase at psv compared to what he was on at twente

It says whats on offer, not what he had. He is turning down a pay increase at PSV. Which is likely to get even bigger before he signs with GC.
