Yep. For a mob who keeps defying all odds to be premiers, has the best youth in the country, arguably the best coach, and soon the best facilities in the land also... I definitely see our cup as half full.

Business savvy people 'invest' in football for a whole bunch of reasons. Profit not so often in football, they do it anyway...

i believe it is going to happen because who wouldnt wants to invest in us

Business savvy people that want to make a profit

We are the leanest run club that makes a small loss each year- quoted as $500,000 - $750,000 last year. We are about to get to the stage where each club will around $1.2m - $1.5m (as per an AUFC fan forum). In other words when the new TV deal kicks in there is no reason why we can't be profitable year in - year out.

Extra capital will always help - but we don't lose $5-6m a year like some other clubs.

Yep, Pat's right, unlike some clubs we clearly have a vision for how we can become self sustaining. Which while it's ultimately important for all clubs, to be fair, for the Mariners it's more critical than most. But, to the board and everyones great credit, they have always known this and so forged ahead with big and ambitious plans like the COE, which is quite an incredible coup and achievement securing the funding and investment they have.

It's why I hate negativity around our club, what's been achieved at the Mariners is genuinely remarkable. I know some people will have been burnt and burnt out by the process, as that what it takes to produce something large out of nothing, but again, it's a hell of an achievement. AND, we can play football too and watch it in the most beautiful stadium in the HAL!

So pass the yellow coolade around. What's not to like?

http://www.smh.com.au/sport/a-league/central-coast-steer-clear-of-being-spartak-mariners-20120718-229tq.html

The Russians may not be coming after all. As it's turned out, Central Coast Mariners may not need them. Eight months ago, a Russian consortium connected to Spartak Moscow inked a deal to become the club's new major shareholders.

Trouble is, they haven't followed through. And having managed to get by without them, the Mariners are now starting to trade their way out of trouble. Suddenly, there's an increasingly possibility that the club will be able to remain in local hands.

The key to the turnaround has been the Centre of Excellence, a vision which is fast becoming an impressive reality. This week, the sun was shining in more ways than one at Tuggerah when chairman Peter Turnbull announced a 25-year lease with Toga Hotels which will see a five-storey Travelodge, carrying the Mariners brand, constructed within the next 18 months.

It's a key plank in the development, which has already seen the Soccer 5s complex opened early this year, and will, within the next couple of weeks, see construction begin on an aquatic centre. The Mariners have already signed a letter of intent for a medical centre to occupy the first two-and-half floors of an office block which will complete the bulk of the project. Ultimately, that's a lot of rental income, and that's the pipeline which will end up funding the Mariners long-term.

A bullish Turnbull says: "In the old days, Marconi were the best club in the NSL because of their licensed club. These days, you have to be a lot smarter about things. But it's the same principle. Within 18 months, because of what we've got at Tuggerah, this club will be profitable on an annual basis. I'm very confident about that."

What's been the problem, and what's captured the headlines, in the meantime has been the cash flow problems which have seen superannuation unpaid, and occasional late payments to players and coaching staff. In the background have been the Russians, usually portrayed as saviours. Just why the Russians haven't executed their deal is a complex issue, but despite their failure to come up with the money the Mariners have managed to survive.

The sales of Rostyn Griffiths, Mustafa Amini, Matt Simon and now Alex Wilkinson to overseas clubs have obviously helped, while some sponsors have been kind enough to advance payments ahead of schedule. More recently, Football Federation Australia has come to the party with an extra $500,000 dividend from new sponsorship deals.

Add this to the fact that rental income from Tuggerah is beginning to flow, and things aren't as desperate as they once were. And if the FFA come good with their pledge to have a new TV deal in place before the start of the season which will pay the salary cap, then the Mariners will have turned the corner. Big time. Then it's about what to do next.

If, and despite Turnbull's optimism it still remains an if, the Mariners can get through the survival stage, then they will have an asset unmatched in Australia, and a complex as good as many in Asia, where spending on football infrastructure has boomed during the past decade.

A hotel, an aquatic centre, and a training venue that includes a gymnasium and all-weather surface. Eventually, there will be another two or three full-sized fields added, and perhaps a 3,000-seat grandstand next to the main pitch.

That all adds up to a one-stop shop for visiting teams, whether they be A-League sides preparing to play at Bluetongue Stadium, the various national teams wanting a training camp, state junior teams for a national carnival, or foreign clubs who've come to Australia for pre-season training. Tuggerah may not be the most recognisable location, nor are the Mariners the biggest club in the country. But together they're years ahead of their time.

The MARINER`s & the COE are going to give the area a huge boost with tourism & publicity, not just in this country but around Asia as well.

It`s about time Wyong Council got more involved too.
Things like:-
a) Signage along the freeway the Freeway
B) Re-naming Wyong Rd to "MARINERS" Drive
c) Flags (like along the bridge at Gosford)
d) Lobby Cityrail to paint the station navy & yellow
e) Change signage to read Tuggerah-Home of the MARINER`s.

So c`mon Wyong council, get off your arse, there`s a revolution happening in your own backyard!!!!!

From the smh Michael Cockerill article above ... Mike makes some interesting comments... maybe we have almost traded our way out of trouble by selling players which is what the original planning behind the COE was... to develop an on-sell players while keeping a young strong squad....

I would love SBS to one day do a show from the COE so everyone could see what is built and what is to be built over the next 18 months...

The revenue streams behind the COE are

Already In Place
A licensed club with poker machines [about 40 ] needs to be freshen up a tad looking a bit old but not a huge cost to do, developing and on selling players into higher leagues. Car parks, Training facilities of playing fields and a sorta gym type buildings, rent from Soccer5 and 10 small fustal type fields, conference centre

Being Built
A Aquatic centre and gym ... already funded with a 11 million dollar grant from the Commonwealth Government..

Approved Planned and I assume now funded

130 room motel and conference centre.. outdoor dinning areas..

Other Stuff

Not sure where this is aside from what Mike says the bottom floors are rented an office block ..

From what I understand the Russians wanted to "follow through".

The sticking point came with the government ratifying the deal. Given the amount of dollars the government ploughed into the facility, the fact that it is on council land and that it will be predominantly a community facility an majority share overseas investor couldn't take control of the governing trust.

I know very little of government legalities around these things so can't give specifics.
