Derby Day - 23/10/09

Let me be the first to predict a shattering 1-0 loss.

Why?

Newcastle demonstrated yesterday that they can play football. In fits and starts, sure, and they've got the concentration span of the kid with ADD who's just slugged three cans of Red Bull and half a dozen wizz-fizzes, but they can play.

Why else?

Our defence is very good, but no defence is impenetrable. The scum have the right combination of speed and tidy one-touch passing to get through us.

What more?

While the scum's defence is ordinary, we're not creating enough chances to guarantee that we'll test them and find them out. If we were making a hundred chances a game and finishing quite a few off then I'd predict that we'll certainly find the net at least once and it will be enough, but I just have a feeling that we'll get the yips again.

And for the last point?

They lift against us. Always. It doesn't matter how shit they are, they just seem to lift. They find ways through us, they make that little extra effort, they're that much more ruthless. If they're going to find the solidity that it takes to make an early lead stick then Friday night's going to be the time to do it.

If we're going to beat them on Friday we're going to have to be very bloody good, up front and down back. We've got to destroy them right across the park because if we don't, they've got enough here and enough there that they can make our big night one of frustration and disappointment. Again...

Can't disagree with any of those points Dibo. They are capable of some very attractive football at times. Patafta is getting more game time than ever and is starting to show his class, Haliti is a tricky buggar and Bridges is a wily old campainer who is getting better each start, so combine that with as you quite rightly point out thier ability to always lift against us points towards a potential banana skin for us for sure.

I agree Andre,
Just posted in very similar vein on another thread.
I don't predict we'll lose. I predict like you say Dibo that anything less than a high quality performance and we'll be in  trouble.

I reckon we will have a seaky win, they will dominate possesion and have the better chances but we will score two goals on the counter attack, 2-0 crowd around 7.5k

Don't give a f*ck how we do it - can score off a beachball for all I care.  I sense a hard fought 1-0 to either side.

Half of me says we need to score early to get us in the right mindset and if we concede early we will put heads down and not perform, half of me says half the team is quite new to the whole scumcastle derby so won't get upset if we happen to go down a goal early, especially considering the scum effort last round, and half of me says you can't predict the future by looking at the past so it's all up for grabs!

Also hope that we don't do that whole "only play on one side of the field" thing that we always do against them.

Did Wee-Mac and Dee Daa Travis play in the last derby??

dude you were at the game... were you on the piss that night? Wee-mac yes, Travis no... also Doig and Crowell no, which I think will make a big difference this week!

I may have been to be honest.  ;)

And that's what I was getting at - Doig will shut them down, and Crowell will make it even easier for him to do so, at which point Dee Daa Travis will be unleashed.  ;D

If they can control our midfield (remember the difference Ljubo made when he went into the midfield last time) we'll get done. Matty aside, none of our "strikers" even look as if they know where the net is, let alone how to find the inside of it.
Oh how I hope they make me so wrong on Friday. A brace to both Dmac & Kwassy, to go with Matty's trio, would be so nice!

I would like to see us win this one but I also have the feeling that it may end up on the wrong side of the ledger. Last weeks stats don't make for pretty reading despite the win. 40% of the possession, 7 shots on goal all helped by woeful defending by Bob Malcolm. Don't get me wrong I will take a win any day but there needs to be a big lift in the final third if we are going to do anything this year.

Some may argue that Newcastle are playing wonderful football but 6 losses in a row also shows the fragility of Newcastle. Ben Kennedy has been woeful in the sticks hence the need to pepper the goals as much as possible during the game. Get anywhere near the box and let it rip I say as I suspect that Kennedy's confidence is way down and he will continue to blunder.

A lose is very possible. We couldnt put Nth Queensland away; I know we didnt have Wee Mac and Hutch for that match, but still, even with them on the field, if the boys slack off 1 bit Im sure Sasho wouldnt mind putting one past Danny.

If the team goes into the match with an underdog mentality they will play well, like they did against GCU and Melb.

All depends on which Mariners team turns up. The Gold Coast/Roar one would be preferrable!

Well i see how we can loose but let us not forget how woeful this team is they got a second string keeper,  Loobo whos is not expected to play, and they have a coach who hasn't had a greatest record in the league.

BUT never be confident with these bogans or sasho he trys so hard against his old clus we no that.

1-1 all wit a late winner by travis so 2-1.
