Danny or Matty

Without doubt a crowd favourite from Hal 1, was Danny V… like Matty he was a replacement for the first team goalie and his display in Hal 1 & Hal 3 got us into the grand final… Danny lived for the crowd and AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRrrr he was good … played in the U 23 Australian team and many before the Hal 3 grand final slap had him as the next Socceroo keeper…

Matty HHHHHHHHMMMMMMm what do you say he just keeps getting better each game and it is kinda a reincarnation of sorts ….. last nights display heavens world class +++ ...

Who is / was better at this point in their career ? … does it matter anyway ? …

I was a huge fan of Danny in first 4 seasons but in season 5 he started to be flat footed and misjudge the flight of the ball.
It was also crazy that we allowed/indulged him the mad runs up the field in last 90 secs of the game.

Ryan is a great shot stopper but badly misjudges the ball occasionaly but is remarkable for an 18yo.

Both remarkable young talents but possibly Ryan is slightly ahead at such a young age but Danny never played behing such an organised defence either.

Both great keepers.

As much as I liked Danny I have to say Matty is way ahead.

For a start Matty is 2 years younger than Danny when he got a chance.

Danny may have the edge slightly as a shot stopper but Matty's all-round command of his area, especially on crosses is far better.

Matty also has the upper hand with his distribution, Danny often miskicked when under pressure whereas Matty makes and extra player when we are building from the back.

Finally with regards to temperament Matty wins this hands down. He has bounced back from his mistakes fantastically whereas Danny’s hot headedness resulted in a number of sending’s off which cost us dearly such as the one against Sydney where we lost 5 -4 and then there was his Grand Final melt down.

If by this point in their career you mean age, Matty is a full year ahead of Danny and has had a much higher profile first season than any other young keeper in recent memory. Matty's hands have been his weak point where as Danny was known to have the odd brain snap so both are even in that circumstance.

If you mean their exploits of their first season's then I would have to say its very close. Danny kept us in games all on his own and did it repeatedly where as Matty has broken records but with one of the best central defenders the league has seen infront of him

If Matty continues on the upwards scale then he will be yards ahead of Danny at 20 yrs of age which is the age Danny was during V1. You would have to say that Matty would now be infront of Birighitti of Adelaide for the U'20 World Cup keepers spot and will come back next season as the #1 keeper with a world cup under his belt.

Its Matty for mine by a whisker.

I'm not willing to compare. Both great keepers in their own right. Perhaps due to Ryan's age and experience yet gained he will be truely a world class keeper. However, he is still young and he must not get ahead of himself. It seems he has a great head on his shoulders and if he keeps it up he could reach the highest pinnacles of the football world.

BUT FYI - It's Mathew Ryan, not Matthew Ryan. So would Maty be more applicable?

The key quality for me of Danny Vukovic is his physical presence, he intimidates opponents and inspires his defence. In the last few games Mat Ryan has shown signs of that. Ryan is a far better distributor and has two good feet while Vukovic still has the essential brilliance a top keeper needs. I think if Vukovic had been in the team this year we would have got much closer to Brisbane but Mat Ryan is rapidly closing the gap on Vukovic. If I was to pick an all time Mariners' eleven my vote would go to Danny Vukovic.

Ryan's game the other night was easily his best all round performance and for me it wasn't the double save or the good distribution for me is that he attacked the ball and cut out the risks.(even belted rose on one such save).
Between Ryan and Vukovic I will go with Ryan, his mobility will improve where Danny is now set in his ways.

Despite the amount of games he played, Danny wouldn't rate in the top 4 to have kept for the Mariners. Matty, JVS, Bozza and JC are/were all better keepers. Impestuous, inconsistent, slow reactions and flawed positioning and judgment of flight - all of these combined to ensure his career was never going to go much further, far more an impediment than the often blamed "brain-slap" in the GF.

Gee, I think thats being a bit harsh. Everyone sees it differently though

In my opinion, Danny was just an awesome shot stopper for us, I used to get very nervous when he ventured from the goal mouth, but he was pretty good when the ball went near him and had very safe hands.

Matty is more of a rounded keeper who distributes very well of both feet and is good on crosses. Hands are still a bit suspect as has been said before, but right now I would rather MR in my team.

I have been comparing Danny's effort in the semi-final against the Reds - he came out towards Dodd and then stopped half-way, giving Dodd the time to pick his spot & hit it. Compared to Matty flying out of his area to head the ball away from the GCU player (can't remember who it was now) - he seems to be ready for the all-or-nothing play whereas Danny doesn't seem to want to try that these days.
I kinda feel if Matty had been in Danny's spot against the Reds, he would have been a lot closer and would have made the shot much harder.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Danny, but I think Matty is going to be a lot better over time.

At this point I would go for Danny as he had a great presence between the sticks and bossed the defenders around well. It would have been interesting to see him interact with Patrick and Joshua at the back. Ask me at the end of next season when/if Matt has a another full season under his belt and it might change. He will only grow in confidence after this season. I actually like his quiet demeanor on the field. He just gets the job done without any fuss. Get rid off a few of those simple errors and he will be awesome.
