In all honesty though, I'm pretty sick of these self-indulgent wankers bagging CCM week after week, season after season, not to mention the crap that is said about the A-League - not to name any names... At the end of the day though, I just love watching the Mariners prove these 'journalists' (and I use the term loosely) wrong.

Ch 9 ... The morning show... on the news today they ran every half hour they did a thing about bad behaviour by parents at their local sports teams... essentially in relation to some RL incidents... but they showed under 6 or 7 Football matches ...  at one stage had a chat about it and in the background to the discussion were football matches of little kids... ..

Scoop! Parents act poorly at sports matches. Sigh... Doesn't matter the code, it's the people. I've seen parents key the cars of officials at AFL games and serious abuse at RL and football matches... It's beyond poor wherever it is...
But wouldn't surprise that channel 9 used some choice images to surreptitiously support their agenda...

Er, sorry to sound politically correct on this, but did Ch. 9 get permission off both the parents and the clubs involved in those kiddies' Football games to video them? I mean, in a day when you hear of grandparents and relatives of players being told not to film kids' games because of 'child protection' policies the clubs have had to adopt, who gave Ch. 9 the right to broadcast the kids playing Football? ???  :p

Look everyone - embrace the long ball, love the long ball. After all, the long ball is just a cross, but perpendicular.

In all seriousness, the biggest irony is that I've seen Foz playing for Waverly Old Boys FC, and by george he does enjoy hoofing it up the field. Practice what you preach, Craigy.

Trimboli and Slater in rare form as season kicks off

Leaping Larry
October 12, 2009

"Presuming it does end in defeat for Melbourne " was how Fox Sports' Simon Hill launched a sentence during the Victory-Sydney FC match on Friday night. At the time, it was 88 minutes into the match, and Melbourne was down 0-3. You get the impression Hill is not someone who will be drawn into rash predictions, or perhaps any predictions.

Expert analyst Paul Trimboli was somewhat more committed. In reference to Sydney goalkeeper Clint Bolton, Trimboli noted that he'd registered four clean sheets this season and was "staring down the barrel of a fifth". Unless sheets now come in a barrel, or are routinely fired out of artillery in the absence of more suitable ammunition, this comment may qualify as a key late entry for sporting mixed metaphor of the year. Perhaps best to follow Hill's example and keep our options open. One never knows what may be waiting in the wings, particularly if those wings are flapping around like, well, sheets fired out of a cannon.

Robbie Slater got off to a flying start in the following night's Australia-Netherlands international, referring to the "big challenge" awaiting the Socceroos against Oman during the week, and adding, "What better way to prepare than against the No. 3 in the world, the Netherlands."

In the entire storied history of Dutch soccer, one feels strangely sure that its national team has never previously been categorised as the ideal warm-up for an Asian Cup game against Oman. Another feather in its cap there, to be sure.

Hill was next to extend our world knowledge, declaring that, at the Etihad Stadium clash with Oman, stadium management would be, "Bringing the stands in, as well, to make it a rectangle in Melbourne". Considerable technological marvel though the Docklands stadium may be, it doesn't exactly change shape like one of the Transformers, or Inspector Gadget. It's the bays of seats at ground level that are transportable via hydraulic means, not the stands. The stadium itself seems highly likely to maintain the same shape, at least until AC/DC performs there at full amplification in February.

However, quote of the night undoubtedly belonged to Paul Trimboli, with his perceptive observation, re Socceroo Lucas Neill. "He's looked a little bit like he's lacking match conditioning, and that's obviously because he hasn't played." Flawless reasoning, really.

However, as Bojic head down as usual, began his drunken man impression to dribble down the right hand touchline against NQF, Simon Hill said what we were all thinking "just where is he going?" to which Slater replied "to the Leagues Club"...

Credit where credit is due

I enjoy Trimboli's commentary. Check out his and Andrew Orsatti's wiki site & try & pick the wanker. One had a playing career on the field and the other ones was all in his head.

The world game is not the Australian game

By Dennis Cometti | View Archive October 26th, 2009, 8:13 am

I'd love to say I'm on assignment - that sounds so cool - but the truth is I'm on holidays.

When I left Australia, I got my burly son to do the house sitting and thought the AFL should be able to take care of itself. After all, it was only going to be a month.

Yet here it is, a few days in, and the AFL is being pestered by bloody soccer!

Maybe "The World Game" is just testing the water, maybe it's suddenly found its long lost humour gene, but any suggestion the AFL competition should take a two month sabbatical during some future soccer World Cup in Australia is simply laughable.

Having said that, I'm sitting here at my keyboard wearing an Atletico Madrid away top.

It's a tradition of mine, whenever I'm in a European city I buy a soccer top, if nothing else they're great to sleep in!

But I'm also doing my bit. I'm helping the minnows. No Real, Man U or Milan in my collection, we're talking Atletico, Fulham and Atalanta. In other words no team with a chance in hell of winning anything in my lifetime ... and therein lies the tragedy of soccer today. A collection of lop-sided competitions overrun with overpaid divas.

Still, that's a story for another day.

When I was growing up, Aussie rules was my Saturday, soccer was my Sunday. I enjoyed them both but like so many Australians I made my choice.

Americans did, and continue to do the same thing.

Why do countries with home-grown games fail to embrace soccer? Maybe it's because soccer has a way of making itself less than embraceable.

In Australia I'm tired of having the game broadcast to me by zealots. To hear them tell it there's never been a match that sucked.

Furthermore I don't like being told what I shall call a game. You WILL call it football. Well, no. I get confused enough already these days. Let's just stick with soccer.

Then of course there's that term "The World Game", which is designed to let you know you're a moron because you apparently "don't get it" when the rest of he world does. It's a full-brother to "The Beautiful Game" but unfortunately neither expression comes close to being THE Australian game.

It worries me then that, although I might be a moron, I'm dealing with people who don't get which of those two descriptions sits best with Australians.

As for stopping the AFL ... stop right there.

I'm worried that the heads of the other sports will say that kind of thing. I expect it from the Rugby League idiots, but afaik, the AFL guys are a tad smarter about it.

TBH i dont think their will be to many complaints from Rugby league folk. If they play thier cards right they will get free stadium upgrades and a 2 month holiday.

He's right about the "overpaid divas" though.......

He's also right about being a moron. Well, half a moron, the non-moron half of him actually supports football!
