Cash-strapped Adelaide United call for reform
By Val Migliaccio
December 20, 2008
ADELAIDE United's fiscal success at the FIFA Club World and AFC Champions League has forced the club to table immediate changes to the Football Federation Australia over the unbalanced distribution of prizemoney.
The current agreement, which has been in place since 2004 - a year before the start of the A-League - has seen Adelaide lose 60 per cent of the $2.8 million in prizemoney it has received from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation to seven other other clubs and the Football Federation Australia.
Adelaide jagged $2.2 million from FIFA on Thursday night for beating Al Ahly 1-0 in Yokohama at the Club World Cup and $600,000 for being runner-up in Asia.
As it stands, Adelaide will get $1.12 million for finishing fifth at the Club World Cup and runner-up to Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League.
Adelaide is expected to break even after spending $2 million on its 15 international club matches this season.
The FFA will pocket 4 per cent of Adelaide's hard work - $112,000 - while Perth, Newcastle, Melbourne, Sydney, Queensland, Wellington and Central Coast will share an incredible $1.16 million.
Adelaide chief executive Sam Ciccarello said the Reds wanted to look at the distribution of the lucrative prizemoney.
He said all clubs agreed to the current breakdown of all prizemoney from international competitions but now Adelaide had pioneered a new chapter in Australian soccer history it was time for change. And it appears that the FFA and the member clubs will agree to the new distribution format.
Ciccarello wouldn't elaborate on the new system but it appears the clubs winning international money will be able to earn a greater slice of the pie rather than the current 40 per cent.
Ciccarello said a decision should be made within a fortnight after Adelaide put the motion forward to all clubs and the FFA.
"Everybody had their focus on running an A-League club at the time the financial rewards system was put forward in 2004," Ciccarello said. "Back then if a club was going to participate in an international club competition it was a bonus.
"We've put a submission into the FFA and the A-League clubs and there is a review of the prizemoney distribution as we talk."
Ciccarello said Adelaide was also potentially close to signing more sponsorship dollars from Japanese companies after more than 200 nations around the world watched United's three Club World Cup matches.
"We've got four or five companies interested but we've got to continue our relationship in Asia," he said. "That means getting back into the AFC Champions League, that's the goal for 2010."
