Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Chants - Feedback & Suggestions

Could be worth another whip-around. I don't know how much it would cost or any of the associated logistics, but don't let the cost put you off pursuing it PP. What do you think FP?... BG?

Appreciate it mate but it's something I think we'd push for the club to fund if possible. They'd essentially take ownership of it as it would need to be removed after each game. Might ask a few questions and see how The Den have theirs arranged. I'll let you know where we're at with it when I can. Things are pretty mental in the office with organising the next ACL game, Medal Dinner (tonight) and memberships so once that's tied down I'll be able to chat to them in a bit more detail.

PP- they used to have raffles in the Kendall & on ground to raise funds for those sort things.
Just a thought.

Was at the Champions League Semi in Barcelona the other night.

Some great chants from the Munich fans (ofcourse they were on top). Some in English, The German guy next to me said it was a cultural thing to sing some chants in English.

Super Bayern(Mariners), Super Bayern AH AH..... fast tempo repeat

Who the f**k is Barcelona(Newcastle) AH AH....Repeat slow tempo

. i am a bit late to this thread ... was it moved from somewhere else? ;)

. overall i agree with much of what has been said:
  • baby steps - allow what is building to snowball ... don't try to force it too much, too quickly
  • short simple chants should be the immediate goal
  • most people want to be involved but not sing and chant all game ... its just not gonna happen. those so inclined can join the bay and go for it full on for a couple of hours
  • designated times for certain chants is great (was going to suggest something similar) ... but definitely avoid the 80th minute
  • the bay should actually allow the other stands to start the mariners-clap-clap-clap chant (unless the remainder of the crowd need motivation - but i think other simple chants are proving effective for this now). and please don't ruin it - i know a lot of people don't like it and the bay insists it needs to be done quicker (or get quicker) this only discourages and confuses people (simple = slow and steady)
  • it may be effective to use the mega mega to educate ... but it will need to grow organically. people may start to hum or stamp along maybe start to speak the words ... adding to the noise. if the tipping point comes, great - you may see a little more vigour ... but i wouldn't expect it

And what are peoples opinions on getting our capo a little scaffold to stand on... like in the video?

. honestly i am not a fan

. firstly the practical issues ... will need to be approved by the stadium ... will need to be erected/dismantled regularly ... for insurance/certification reasons will probably need to be erected by the stadium's contractors ... who buys, maintains, stores it ... etc, etc. i don't think anybody is really ready for this yet

. the positioning of the capo and mega mega is critical to engagement of the other stands. a scaffold at the front with the capo facing the relatively small bay will only exacerbate the problems they have already had (such as not having a roof) ... no need to try and engage with people still sitting at home in narara

. i kinda feel we need two megs ... the small one for the bay - to coordinate (facing back) and one for the rest of the stadium (facing forward). but i assume this is difficult to get right ... as you can tell i am not a regular in the bay and was evicted on tuesday night  ... so take my input for what its worth (not much)

Agree with BG. Far too many issues. Much prefer a more subtle approach for our Capo. As subtle as one can be when using our new 'ship's cannon', that is!

If that thing was only on 2.5 volume the other night, you'd be able to lob a cannonball into the away supporters bay if it were turned up the max! Awesome!

Instead of a scaffold you may want to consider a tripod or pole for the 'cannon'. With the right one, you could get it up to a decent height and give the capo a chance to devote energy to the songs, not lugging the beast around all game.

Stand for the cannon, bodymike for the capo.

You know it makes sense.

I think BG is right when it comes to 3 clap. It died in the stands several times before the will was gone last game simply because of timing issues. Namely being too fast, not acoustics.

Short and simple for chants useful for wider crowd support is also true to a degree. But for years I've been trying to get people to join in come on you yellow for example. Very simple. But I think it exposes you too much. People for now just want to be able to fart out a quick word - insert Mariners, and then gesture - insert, clap or stomp feet - in between.

So, in my deep deep understanding of this craft, what I have concluded is we need a bucketful of fart and gesture chants. Hope that's of use PP. I'll be here all week. :piano:

Hey! "Coast!" is another prime example of fart and gesture, and its definitely growing in its patcipation.

Incidentally, "We are champions" - is also taking off, so may as well flog that on the get everyone involved with the MEGA style chants while we can. Not saying we won't be able to do we are top of the league and we are champions for the rest of our existence of course.

On the mega, I can't wait to see how it develops. It's something new. PP now has a direct line and relationship to the rest of the stadium, that's never happened before. That's pretty powerful and I imagine will need some time to - A get used to and B - build the ideal relationship and educate everyone. Which is a two way street. PP's going to need to be brave and be a bit of a glutton for punishment in finding out what will and won't work. Once or twice is not a good indicator of anything, let alone develop something. And things change too.

On volume, be judicious for sure, but don't be shy with extra volume for some periods PP. Or at the very least do some tests. Don't want to see your minions heads exploding and all, but how loud it sounds to you is very different to people a couple hundred metres away. And it will be amazing for fans across the WHOLE ground to hear you sometimes.

might sound silly, and people can make all the swimming carnival calls they like, but I was sitting on the couch after training wondering whether a variant of "everywhere we go" between the two grandstands wouldn't have people losing their shit.

you'd have to trim it back (fewer repetitions, tighten it up) and train the crowd on what the follow up is (yellow army I suspect), but it could be a big noise, and because it's a call and response rather than a song, people are happier to get in (people are happier to shout than sing, at least at first).

you might start it off with the bay calling to the stands, but eventually you would want the stands calling to each other.

maybe bay 16 kicks it off on 16 minutes, the west stand calls it out on 44 minutes and the east stand calls it out on 71 minutes.

it'd be something only we do (in the HAL at least) and done right it would be a signature "big noise" moment for us.

of course, happy to take feedback, or if there's a better call and response, let's do that instead.

I like it, maybe as a lead in to the "who are we?" - "Mariners" chant, e.g.

Everywhere we go
The people wanna know
Who we are
Where we come from
So we tell them
(Who we are
Where we come from) *possibly leave this one out?
We are the Mariners
The mighty Mighty Mariners

Who are we?
Mariners
Who are we?
Mariners
... etc.

I try to not +1 - that's what the like button is for ;) - but THIS... So very much!
I fear that it might be too long and so, lose the audience halfway through. But if we can make it work, it would be so very much worth it.
Looking at it last week, it looked to me like the initial calls very answered first from the area around the corner by the stairs first. Anyone know whether there were any particular groupings sitting there? Or whether it was just blind luck? I was just thinking that, if they were grouped, it might be worth looking for engagement with them, for this sort of thing.

wondering whether a variant of "everywhere we go" between the two grandstands wouldn't have people losing their shit

. i know it isn't possible ... but a pre-game showing on the big screen of auburn(?) going absolutely batshit out the front of the kb way back when could inspire people

. the guy is quite likely a lunatic ... but it is motivating :pirashoot:

He's one of the nicest guys I've had the pleasure of sharing many a beer with. And probably a lunatic. In the best possible way. Still around these days, it's rare he misses a game. He has led that chant a few times of late

My 2 cents...

It will definitely require the YA to liaise with the Mariners to get some cooperation. Get the ground announcer to go through the "rules" pre-game and then have the words up on the big screen when the time comes. This will only need to be done for 2 or 3 matches... before the crowd catches on.

Also, change the ending to something that includes the chant of "Champions"

We are...
MARINERS!!!
We are..,
CHAMPIONS!!!
... etc.
