Reds relinquish second spot after defeat to MarinersSaturday, 15 November 2008

A bandaged Sasa Ognenovski battles for possession against the Mariners' Nigel Boogaard.
Brendon Thorne Getty Images Adelaide United FC has given up second spot on the Hyundai A-League table after suffering a 3-nil loss to the Central Coast Mariners in front of 7,865 at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford.

Despite having their share of chances, The Reds were unable to bounce back just three days after their AFC Champions League Final defeat as Matt Simon, Sasho Petrovski and Adrian Caceres all managed to get their names on the score sheet to send United packing.

From Wednesday nights AFC Champions League Final 2nd leg, goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic, Angelo Costanzo and Fabian Barbiero all returned to the starting line up against the Central Coast in a match that had significant bearings for both sides, the Mariners starting the night three points behind United.

Questions about any ACL Final hangover were answered early by The Reds who started promisingly, Barbiero narrowly missing the target with a curling shot after an assist by Travis Dodd.

United was enjoying more of the possession in the opening 15 minutes as they tried to sting the Mariners with an early goal, however this ascendancy was flattened as a period of persistent aerial pressure from the Mariners was rewarded in the 18th minute.

Simon made the most of a messy goal mouth scramble after United failed to deal with a cross from the left, the striker putting the ball into the back of the net from point blank range.

Needing a response, Cassio should have tied the game up in the 25th minute after he was on the end of a delightful Robert Cornthwaite cross, but the unmarked Brazilian somehow put his header into the ground and bounced it over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Dodd then tested Mariners keeper Danny Vukovic with a tame shot as The Reds played with a man short for 10 minutes as Sasa Ognenovski received seven stitches to a gash on the forehead courtesy of Dylan McAllister.

With Ognenovski stitched up and back on the park, United looked to go into the break just a solitary goal down, however they would stare at a two goal deficit as Petrovski poached on a ball from close range after another defensive tangle from a Mariners corner.

Then on the stroke of half time, Galekovic prevented it from being three, managing a fine reflex save from Petrovski.

United started the second half more desperate than they finished the first as they clearly went out searching for goals, and it nearly came when again, Cassio should have at least hit the target but unfortunately he sprayed his effort over the top.

The Mariners made United pay, a ball from a corner spilling out to Caceres on the edge of the area and he picked his spot and rammed it home.

Three goals down, United would need to produce 30 minutes like the Central Coast did at Hindmarsh Stadium back in Round 7 when they were staring at a 3-nil scoreline and came back to draw level.

But with so much energy and intensity expelled during Wednesdays match against Gamba Osaka, a United resurgence would not eventuate. The Reds could have found themselves even further behind if not for Galekovic, the keeper pulling off another superb save to deny McAllister.

Alemao tried to liven things up after he was introduced, his first touch of the game a free kick that nearly brought about a goal, before he launched a bullet from 20 metres less than a minute later that skimmed the cross bar.

Galekovic was in the action again late on to stop John Hutchinson from adding a fourth and on a night where The Reds once again managed to create enough chances to get something out of the game, they could not manufacture any substantial attempts that threatened the target. In fairness, the Mariners could also have added to their goal tally, prevented only by heroics of Galekovic and missed opportunities from Nik Mrdja.

After the match, Adelaide United Coach Aurelio Vidmar was left reflecting on what might have been had The Reds made more of their opportunities.

There were a couple of defining moments in the game that could have maybe changed the result, with Cassio missing a good chance in the first half and then again after the break, Vidmar said.

But the Central Coast are a very good and physical side and they played well and had a very potent attack with the three boys up front.

Im proud of my team, they fought to the end and gave it their all.

The result drops United to third on goal difference, leaving The Reds next match on Saturday at home to Sydney FC a crucial one with John Kosminas men just a point back in fourth spot.

Let's be honest we were lucky to play them when we did. They looked very, very tired.

Having said that we were cruising and were in control for most of the match. You get the feeling that we could have stepped up a gear if we needed to and that's the sign of a class team.

What happened with the crowd? Plenty of promotion during the week about the importance of the game so it's hard to work out. Bit of rain in the morning but otherwise a great day to go to the football. Hopefully we start to build larger crowds over Christmas / New Year.

Pitch looked terrible but didn't seem to play too badly. The sooner we hold the stadium rights the better.

I think the crowd (or lack thereof) was due to a number of factors:

Lots and lots of end of HSC parties last night
Threat of rain
Seeming lack of families with little kids  - tough times perhaps?

3-0 was a solid performance, but what did catch my eye was in the second half when danny was keeping up by the road end, the adelaide supporters (or lack of) must have got under danny's skin as i found he was yelling abuse at them a few times, i was sitting in bay 28 and i couldnt hear a thing thay were saying to him, but then after the game i watched danny heaps closely and he took his gloves off and looked straight at the 2 adelaide supporters and gavee them the finger, did anyone else see this as i was with a mate and he was oblivious to it,

Rain was forecast and it looked like it might piss down at any moment. All the undercover seats in GA were taken in anticipation but it never happened.

Crowds across the A-League for all teams have been dissappointing so far this season. The Mariners deserve to start pulling better crowds now - sitting 2nd on the ladder (maybe top next weekend), playing an attacking style of football that sees us with the most goals scored for a team and the highest goal scoring player (Simon). The memory of that debacle against the Sheepshaggers is fading fast.

The Central Coast should be immensely proud of the Mariners achievements so far in the A-League and the team deserves bigger crowds. The professionalism demonstrated  by the club is better than most, if not all other teams in the A-League.

A championship this season would crown the Mariners the best team across the four seasons of the comp to date. An amazing achievement for a club most thought would just be making up the numbers. Get out there and support YOUR successful LOCAL team! (OK, I know I'm preaching to converts on here)  :pirashoot: :pirashoot: :pirashoot:

I was a bit upset at the stick Mrdja copped from the crowd- anyone forget who he is...give him time and i am sure he can show us why he was once considered to be arguably the best striker in Australia!
Not to mention he was awesome vs Sydney last week- just had a bad day

I saw some problems out there tonight our wide backs in defense played very poor ....the 3 - 0 could maybe should have been 7-3 if you count the missed goals ..........
+1
Cassio and Cristiano- lmao at them missing!
and alemao- how close do u want to get?

We should have scored- Hutcho, Macca and Mrdja, and a 2nd from Sasho
so 7-3 seems a good comment!

Mrdja is the Australian Mick Ferguson... can score plenty when he isn't injured!

If Nick had set Dylan up and not been such a ball hog the final score would have been more in our favour. His want to impress cost us a couple of easy goals. I can understand him wanting to showcase he still has the goods, but this canalso be  evident when you assist a great goal as well. I hope Nick stays and doesn't leave as been toted as I think we should retain our 4 strikers. They work so well together and off each other when the need to impress is not a factor in their gameplay.

I was bummed I had to watch this game on Fox, not financial enough to make the game. Even the crowd was dissapointing, the atmosphere seemed electric and the Marinators chants sounded fantastic on the TV.
Props!

I really dont see it as possible for us to keep the 4 strikers we have
when u look at clubs losing strikers
eg. Sydney and Santalab- someone who isn't on the same level as our 4 (except for those superb wonder shots he pulls off 2 times a season)
Just the thing that needs to be decided is who we need to keep...

I think there is a general feeling that he "owes" the club and most of the banter was pretty good natured and he seemed to take it in the spirit intended (piss taking more than abuse)

Even winning a back to back Premiership would stamp out our authority. Then we can think about doing the Double and winning the toilet seat.
