THE Japanese invasion of the Central Coast begins today when Kawasaki Frontale's party - of 48 - arrives to prepare for Wednesday's Asian Champions League match against the Mariners.

After Saturday's 3-1 J-League victory over Nagoya Grampus, Kawasaki plan to extend their two-point group lead over the Mariners and Tianjin Teda, with Pohang Steelers a further point back.

The club booked 48 rooms at Crowne Plaza in Terrigal - even though the retinue arrives at 10am today, the rooms were booked for last night to ensure all were ready.

Such extravagance, estimated to have cost some $30,000, illustrates the financial gulf between Japanese and Australian football. For the Mariners' most recent overseas match - a 2-2 draw against Tianjin - the club sent 25 people to shared rooms in China.

Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna said his side prepared well but the approach of the Japanese giants was breathtaking. "We've heard they're flying business class all the way," McKinna said yesterday. "We know how important this competition is for all the Japanese clubs, you can see they all want to win. There's no chance of them doing what the Korean club [Ulsan] did in Newcastle [fielding a virtual reserve team].

"We only travel with 18 players plus seven staff, and we do our best with that."

He said he expected Kawasaki to field a full-strength team as they chased three points and the substantial prizemoney.

"Pohang and Tianjin were quite big and physical sides but we've noticed that the Japanese have a smaller and very skilful team, and that's something we'll have to be aware of," he said. "They've got some excellent players, three very good Brazilians with a striker [Renatinho] who has an excellent left peg and some defenders who like to get forward."

His sources say Nagoya-born star striker Jong Tae-se - who controversially elected to play for North Korea - could miss the match after an arduous recent schedule.

No such concerns exist for the Mariners, who have no injured players and only Matt Simon and Pedj Bojic unavailable due to suspension.

"It's the first time in four years that we haven't got a single player on the injured list, and it's quite a luxury to have," he said. "We've got two triallists from Sheffield United and two under-21 New Caledonians we've got a very full training ground."

Dylan Macallister comes in for Simon, and Adrian Caceres for Bojic.

"They're going to be a quality team but they're beatable, they've drawn against Pohang, and we should have beaten them," Elrich said. "Home games are the important games for us. We should be a bit fresher than them, and we have to get three points."

Elrich is still working his way back to full fitness after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament last year.

"I don't know if I'm up for a start yet but 30 or 40 minutes would be good, but any time is good time, I'll go out there, give 110 per cent."

Everything I've read about them has been pretty positive. Scott McIntyre on TWG had this preview of the ACL a few weeks ago which was interesting.

GROUP H

KAWASAKI FRONTALE (JAPAN)

A side that approach their football with an attacking mentality, Kawasaki have been building piece by piece for two or three seasons and have talent almost unrivalled in Asian football. The likes of Juninho and Chong Tese, Kengo Nakamura and Vitor Junior should thrill Asia making life tough for the Central Coast, Pohang and Tianjin.

CENTRAL COAST MARINERS (AUSTRALIA)

The Coast had a disappointing end to the A-League season and how they cover for the loss of Mile Jedinak will be the key Lawrie McKinna has brought in Shane Huke to fill his boots, but he will have a tough job trying to settle into a new team with limited preparation. The return of Ahmad Elrich is almost like a new signing for McKinna and players such as Nik Mrdja, Dylan Macallister and Adrian Caceres are the type that could upset their more fancied regional rivals.

TIANJIN TEDA (CHINA)

Tianjin are perhaps the real surprise of all the Asian qualifiers the northern Chinese city on the tip of both the Yangtze River and the Pacific Ocean are not considered to be one of the Big 4 (Dalian, Shanghai, Shandong and Beijing) of Chinese football but have been making steady progress in recent years, culminating in a 4th placed finish in last years CSL which booked their ACL ticket. Zuo Shusheng has recruited smartly bringing in Sydney FC forward Mark Bridge on loan as well as fringe NT midfielder Wang Xinxin, but the move that made the biggest headlines was the acquisition of Italian veteran Damiano Tommasi. Now 34 and in the twilight of his career the former Roma star will be called upon to fill the big gap left by Darko Matic who has moved to Beijing.

POHANG STEELERS (KOREA REPUBLIC)

Pohang had an up and down time of it domestically last season, finishing fifth in the 14-team league, before being bundled out in the first round of the playoffs by Ulsan. Redemption came in the form of a FA Cup triumph that earned them a spot in the ACL for the second year in succession but theres still a sense that they are far off the glory days of the late 1990s when they won back to back Asian Club Championships. Sergio Farais has lost 2 players, defender Cho Sung-hwan and NT midfielder Park Won-jae to the J-League but has brought in several players as cover one of whom, journeyman Brasilia, will be expected to make a big splash. The former Energie Cottbus and Belenenses forward chalked up the most assists in last years K-League with Ulsan and has been in impressive Pre-Season form.

WINNER: Kawasaki Frontale

RUNNER-UP: Central Coast Mariners

Bojic suspended as well, that worries me a bit more a shaky defence against a skilled and quick side could pose problems. This is the game for Mrdja to prove he's valuable, need another striker.

Bojic hasnt exactly covered himself in glory recently, Heff hasnt been outstanding at LM so I'm happy to see him at LB TBH

I think without bojic behind him heff has been very shaky defencively. But bojic has been cleaning up the scraps the last few weeks

Heff is a left back who likes to get forward.......end of in my opinion.

Someone like Caceres offers much more in LM I believe, if he works on his crosses a bit more and first touch he's a great LM for this league.

Heff struggled with LB defensive duties for a while in V1 but his amazing goal scoring record made him look like a superstar.  Last few games of the year (V1) Heff was the perfect LB for this level of football, V3 he did a pretty good job until injured but didn't really get going in V4.  Give him an extended run at LB and he'll get back to his best.

Agreed, sonic is a left back who likes to get forward except for one thing, he can't defend. Not even at HAL level. I've lost count of the number of times he's been skinned down the by-line.

He has great engines and can run all day, loves to get forward and will pop up for a couple of goals, but one on one with an attacker running at him, he is hopeless.

Evening all. I write the Frontale blogspot site and thought I'd wish you lot good luck for Wednesday's game. Should be a good one.

Frontale have made a poor start to the season, but the win against Nagoya at the weekend may just mark a turning point. For the first time this year they looked close to their best, so not great timing for your boys. That's not to say the wheels won't fall off on Wednesday though.

I've heard rumours that our main goal threat, Chong Tese, could be rested having just come off the back of two World Cup qualifiers and a bout of food poisoning. So we'll likely start with two Brazilians - Juninho and Renatinho - up front. Both are good players, but a bit temperamental. Expect to see Juninho miss a hatful and Renatinho making it all too obvious that he's spent his winter holidays watching Christiano Ronaldo DVDs.

Our defense can be a bit suspect, but things have been improving in that department. Your best bet is to get stuck in and not allow our midfield too much time on the ball. Kengo Nakamura and Vitor Junior are as good as any at picking a pass.

I think a lot depends on how Sekizuka, our manager, decides to approach things. He was very cagey in Pohang, but that might just be cos we'd been playing so badly up til then. He fancies himself as a bit of a tactician so he may be thinking "top of the group, long way from home, all we need's a point" and he'd be right. But personally I'd like to see us come out with all guns blazing. The defensive approach doesn't really suit us.

So anyway, there's a slightly long-winded insight into your opponents for Wednesday. Hope you enjoy the match, look after our visiting fans (they're the best our league has to offer) and may the best team win...or draw.

Kwas should really help us out if we are chasing the game..............NOT.

I think you'll be spot on........light up front thou, Caceres or Kwas to move up front should Macca or Nik come off I would imagine.

I wont be there coz i'm in Tamworth but i'm hoping for 2.1 win with at least 8K crowd.

BTW for mine Heff is a better left back than Bojic.  He was never as good as some of you thought in season 1 but is better than some of you now rate him..much higher quality than Pedj he just needs to have his role clearly defined for him.

Kawasaki Frontale coach caught spying on Central Coast MarinersArticle By John Taylor

April 08, 2009 12:00am

THE Kawasaki Frontale extravaganza took another twist yesterday when their Japanese coach Takashi Sekizuka was kicked out of a press box at Bluetongue Stadium for spying on a Central Coast Mariners training session.

Sekizuka was caught taking notes on the Mariners while they were training at the stadium.

Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna was not impressed.

"It's just unusual that they ask for a closed venue then turn up at our training. I think it's a wee bit cheeky but I don't think he would have learned too much," he said.

"He probably would have learned that Paul O'Grady looks double the size of some of his players."

Sekizuka was later pleading ignorance. Through an interpreter, he said he didn't really anticipate being able to see anything when he arrived at the ground. But Sekizuka and his assistant arrived at the stadium long before he was due to speak at the official press conference.

The spying furore is just the latest blow-up in a tumultuous build-up to tonight's Asian Champions League match in Gosford.

The Frontales have had orange juice at their Terrigal hotel tested in case it was tampered with, refused to train at a ground because the grass was too long and have smashed the host club's accommodation and meal bill by more than $30,000.

Kawasaki brought a party of 48 to Australia - 23 more than when the Mariners went to China to play Tianjin - booked an extra night at the hotel so rooms would be ready when they arrived and their players travelled business class.

Sekizuka refused to comment on whether star striker Jong Tae-se had fully recovered from food poisoning. North Korea claimed he was one of three players whose food was tampered with on match day of last week's World Cup qualifier against South Korea.

"He's here and he has been training in Japan," was all Sekizuka was prepared to say on the striker, who was born in Japan, has South Korean heritage but chose to play for North Korea because he had gone through schools in Japan funded by the DPR.

With Matt Simon and Pedj Bojic suspended, McKinna has given opportunities to Dylan Macallister and Adrian Caceres.
