Central Coast Mariners v Kawasaki Frontale AFC CL 3rd Round

About time we started this thread. I know nothing about Frontale except from reading a bit about them. It sounds like they are the gun side in the group and are favourites to top it.

I feel we are starting to hit our straps a litle but the layoff worries me.

I'm willing to predict we'll get up 1-0, DMac in the 58th. Crowd 8,013. However, I do think that we may just see the best team ever to grace the shameful BT pitch, in Frontale.

Matty out is a huge concern. At home we need to start two up front and have a go.

We will win this

Bold call.

As I said in another thread similarly titled to this one:-

If we can perform well against Kawasaki Frontale, we can mix it with any team in this comp. The speed and technical skills of players like Nakamura Kengo will rip us apart more than Taj Minniecon (and he ripped us apart pretty well) e'er could if we're not on top of our game. There is real potential in this match for us to be disposed of unceremoniously.
The eternal hope springs from the professional, tactical and intelligent manner in which we conducted ourselves in Tianjin. We were looking impervious and dangerous. If it weren't for defensive lapses we would have lauded it as one of our best performances ever. Unfortunately, the end result did come with a tinge of disappointment
Never the less, it was a classy hit out especially when considering it was in a strange land indeed (they don't use forks, they use sticks!?). On Wednesday we'll be at home, confident and ambitious. A point will be fantastic, a win euphoric and put us in pole postition to progress in the biggest club competition in the world*!

*if judged by population of nations involved.

I am not prepared to give up on a Matt - Mac combo. Perhaps for the sole reason that I have been unimpressed by Mrdja thus far. Whichever starting combo is chosen I want to see an early change if things aren't going our way.
We've seen early changes before to great effect but are very used to some form of inertia when it comes to substitutions. Knowing how crucial this match is I think we can expect to see our guys go for it similar to the classic matches we witnessed during the freshly finished season.

With that in mind,      3-2 to the Mariners.  Hutcho, Heff, DMac

Bojic suspended as well, that worries me a bit more a shaky defence against a skilled and quick side could pose problems. This is the game for Mrdja to prove he's valuable, need another striker.

Bojic hasnt exactly covered himself in glory recently, Heff hasnt been outstanding at LM so I'm happy to see him at LB TBH

I think you'll be spot on........light up front thou, Caceres or Kwas to move up front should Macca or Nik come off I would imagine.

One thing not in our favour is our off season. These guys are still playing their club fixtures. We haven't had a fair dinkum hit out since China 2 weeks ago! Of course I realise it can be a double edge sword, on the one hand we are fresh and injury free on the other they face a tougher schedule playing in the domestic comp and ACL. Any thoughts?

I think you are right, nothing replicates actual playing in competitive matches so expect them to be a bit rusty early on.

Fitness wont be an issue thanks to Clarkie

1st half hour vital.  if we can hold them out then we should settle in to the game and get a result. really looking forward to elrich and kwas getting some game time. both should be really itching to prove their worth. look for one of these two to provide a pivotal moment.(for a win or loss, 50/50)

With all the chopping and changing due to suspension, I think a draw will be a great result! Won't help us too much though!

We are in trouble as soon as we look to Kwas getting us out of trouble.

i think we can get a good result if we start strong cause i think we will fade to the end of the game due to lack of games, i will be late to the game as my uni lecture doesn't finish till just before 8. Hoping that D-Mac will have a big game and kwassie will get a run

Lawrie has also stated that Elrich isn't fit enough to start but will come off the bench.
