Central Coast Mariners could be about to suffer a mass exodus of players in the January transfer window, with many claiming free agency status as a result of unpaid superannuation.

Fairfax Media understands as many as five players and possibly more have made inquiries about seeking a new home for the rest of the season.

Professional Footballers Association chief executive Adam Vivian confirmed players would be able to exercise their rights at the end of the month if the owed funds are not paid in time.

"The PFA is closely monitoring the situation at Central Coast Mariners," Vivian said. "The non-payment of superannuation is a breach of the standard player contract."

Although this is not the first time the club has been late with payments, the dressing room has been united enough to avoid any large-scale departures. That appears to no longer be the case at the four-time grand finalists.

Underlining the extent of the problem is that some of the players have decided to leave the area and have either moved to Sydney or are contemplating doing so. Previously, every Mariners' player was expected to live on the Central Coast.

Players would ordinarily be unable to leave their clubs mid-contract but a stipulation of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement means they can become free agents if clubs do not meet their contractual obligations, such as paying wages, entitlements and bonuses on time.

Brisbane Roar star Luke Brattan was able to exercise this clause in August, securing a legal release from his contract and going on to join English Premier League club Manchester City, who subsequently loaned him to Championship side Bolton Wanderers.

It won't be the first time the Mariners have lost players mid-contact either, with an operational change at the club – little more than a switch of ownership – allowing Michael McGlinchey to break his deal, on a technicality, to join Wellington Phoenix.

The Mariners are last in the A-League with just one win, having gone winless since the opening day of the season.

Going into the season, the club promised to play attacking, entertaining football. However, they have conceded 23 goals in just 10 games, five more than any other club.

Despite the poor season, the Mariners have consistently fielded the youngest sides in the competition and have several players who will be of interest to other clubs in the second half of the campaign.

Midfielders Anthony Caceres, Liam Rose and Anthony Kalik will surely attract offers, as could Mitch Austin, who has impressed as a flying left winger. Right-back Storm Roux would be a prized commodity, while forward Nick Fitzgerald may consider his options.

Probably the Mariners' best two players, Roy O'Donovan and Fabio Ferreira, may be inclined to stay as they are among the higher-paid players.

The club has already parted company with its two most senior players, goalkeeper Liam Reddy and defender Eddy Bosnar, who fell out with Mariners manager Tony Walmsley.

Walmsley has been hamstrung by a lack of available funds from owner Mike Charlesworth, but whispers of discontent in the dressing room early in the season have continued to plague the embattled club.

However, Walmsley has the complete support of Charlesworth, who made the dramatic claim earlier in the year that he would not judge his manager on wins and losses, but on how entertainingly they played.

"I think I am probably the only one out there who is willing to say it publicly, but the reality is that we are in the entertainment industry and for me that overrides results at this stage," he said in an interview with The World Game.

"We are going to take risks ... and we know that in some games we'll possibly get taken apart. It's a risk we are prepared to take."

Mike Charlesworth is an amazingly supportive owner/ chairman.

We should all be thankful and delighted we have an owner/ chairman like Mike Charlesworth.

Gold Coast and Townsville.........we don't want to end up like them.

Jets..........no one wants to buy . FFA will prop up jets.......but they would not support us CCM. We can see they way Gallop speaks and treats Nix. League, Netball and basketball can make nz work........but not Gallop.

Roryod and Fabio are not our best players! How on earth does he think that?..........I am sure they are both earning 300k plus each. Both are a huge improvement on RichardV and Mane.....mossy signings I think.

Not paying super is embarrassing. Leaks are embarrassing.Being below Jets !

The communication from TW and coaching team has been best ever. The communication from PS excellent. As a fan we must have had the best communication that has been delivered in a football club over last 6/8 months. Nothing to complain about when all the tough questions are being answered and the owner/chairman/CEO and coach/ manager make themselves available and accountable to fans.

MasterFoods........thank you for your amazing support. I only buy Masterfoods.

Mike Charlesworth needs our support and commitment over the next 2/3 seasons while we rebuild and ensure we are still on coast in 10 years.

Club have said that they expect to have super paid in next 48 hours.

According to the CEO it's complicated. Really? It's an SG payment. Nothing is simpler

. i suspect it is also complicated when nobody can really follow what was done in previous years (yes i know it should be simple ... but c'mon i don't think it takes too much imagination to consider things may not be that clear ... we only recruited a financial controller in the last year or so)

. plus ... there could be few cases of them not really knowing what they are contractually obliged to pay

. but, if it is being sorted ... hopefully it is put to bed once and for all ... and all further mentions in the media are met with two fingers and a very public 'pull your heads in' response from the club

Well, if all the outstanding super is sorted and Mike invests in the team when it's in trouble,
Then the only fly in the ointment is the old moving games issue, but I think we're mostly past that, so I'm seeing a lot more ointment than fly and I'm ready to really start believing in MC once the new signings start coming in.

Rumours of Ronaldhino to the HAL btw.

Imo his signing really only makes sense to one side at this stage...

Central Coast Mariners players have received superannuation payments owed to them by club
December 30, 2015 8:00pm
TOM SMITHIES The Daily Telegraph

CENTRAL Coast Mariners players have been told their outstanding superannuation shortfalls have finally been paid, just hours before the club became liable for a points deduction.

In email correspondence sent to the players union (PFA) on Wednesday night, Mariners boss Shaun Mielekamp said the club had made “bulk payments”, believed to total more than $150,000, to clear a backlog that players claimed in some cases went back almost three years.

Under new A-League rules, clubs become liable for sporting sanctions from the start of the new year if they are in arrears on payments to players, but Mielekamp said he was confident that the payments were “in line with your expectations and the CBA requirements ... We will be emailing each player directly confirmation of these payments for their assurance.”

Other clubs including Brisbane, Adelaide and Newcastle are also in arrears on various payments, but it’s believed the PFA is comfortable with progress made there and is unlikely to invoke sanctions immediately.

The Mariners’ payments, once confirmed by the PFA, will also obviate the right of players to seek to have their contracts annulled, with several of the Central Coast playing squad said to be considering their futures with the embattled club.

Meanwhile Sydney FC marquee Filip Holosko is likely to escape punishment despite labelling A-League bosses “stupid” over the ban given to clubmate Matt Simon.

The Slovakian international hit out at the one-week suspension handed out to Simon over his clash with Mariners defender Jake McGing in last Saturday’s 4-1 win for the Sky Blues, even though Simon was convicted on the basis of TV footage that even teammates had labelled damning.

“The FFA suspend him for this one? No!” Holosko told the website Goal.com. “Yeah, I’m surprised. I think it is stupid from FFA for this one.”

But it’s understood the club moved swiftly to apologise for something they attributed to a language misunderstanding, and had the article withdrawn.

FFA elected not to pursue Perth goalkeeper Ante Covic for labelling Melbourne Victory striker Besart Berisha an “Albanian salesman” after the award of a contentious penalty last weekend.

Sydney striker Alex Brosque has been ruled out of Saturday’s trip to Melbourne City, thanks to the ongoing hamstring issue which has restricted him to one 25-minute cameo in the past three games.

Brosque felt tightness in his leg during the win over Central Coast, from the same hamstring where a strain had ruled him out of the previous two games. Though the Sydney captain had been hopeful of being fit to face City, he was left out of the Sky Blues’ travelling squad on Wednesday, with Shane Smeltz returning from injury to replace him.

Holosko was also added to the squad after serving his ban last weekend.
