Central Coast Mariners could be about to suffer a mass exodus of players in the January transfer window, with many claiming free agency status as a result of unpaid superannuation.

Fairfax Media understands as many as five players and possibly more have made inquiries about seeking a new home for the rest of the season.

Professional Footballers Association chief executive Adam Vivian confirmed players would be able to exercise their rights at the end of the month if the owed funds are not paid in time.

"The PFA is closely monitoring the situation at Central Coast Mariners," Vivian said. "The non-payment of superannuation is a breach of the standard player contract."

Although this is not the first time the club has been late with payments, the dressing room has been united enough to avoid any large-scale departures. That appears to no longer be the case at the four-time grand finalists.

Underlining the extent of the problem is that some of the players have decided to leave the area and have either moved to Sydney or are contemplating doing so. Previously, every Mariners' player was expected to live on the Central Coast.

Players would ordinarily be unable to leave their clubs mid-contract but a stipulation of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement means they can become free agents if clubs do not meet their contractual obligations, such as paying wages, entitlements and bonuses on time.

Brisbane Roar star Luke Brattan was able to exercise this clause in August, securing a legal release from his contract and going on to join English Premier League club Manchester City, who subsequently loaned him to Championship side Bolton Wanderers.

It won't be the first time the Mariners have lost players mid-contact either, with an operational change at the club – little more than a switch of ownership – allowing Michael McGlinchey to break his deal, on a technicality, to join Wellington Phoenix.

The Mariners are last in the A-League with just one win, having gone winless since the opening day of the season.

Going into the season, the club promised to play attacking, entertaining football. However, they have conceded 23 goals in just 10 games, five more than any other club.

Despite the poor season, the Mariners have consistently fielded the youngest sides in the competition and have several players who will be of interest to other clubs in the second half of the campaign.

Midfielders Anthony Caceres, Liam Rose and Anthony Kalik will surely attract offers, as could Mitch Austin, who has impressed as a flying left winger. Right-back Storm Roux would be a prized commodity, while forward Nick Fitzgerald may consider his options.

Probably the Mariners' best two players, Roy O'Donovan and Fabio Ferreira, may be inclined to stay as they are among the higher-paid players.

The club has already parted company with its two most senior players, goalkeeper Liam Reddy and defender Eddy Bosnar, who fell out with Mariners manager Tony Walmsley.

Walmsley has been hamstrung by a lack of available funds from owner Mike Charlesworth, but whispers of discontent in the dressing room early in the season have continued to plague the embattled club.

However, Walmsley has the complete support of Charlesworth, who made the dramatic claim earlier in the year that he would not judge his manager on wins and losses, but on how entertainingly they played.

"I think I am probably the only one out there who is willing to say it publicly, but the reality is that we are in the entertainment industry and for me that overrides results at this stage," he said in an interview with The World Game.

"We are going to take risks ... and we know that in some games we'll possibly get taken apart. It's a risk we are prepared to take."

This article and discussion is already being had in the Turbulence thread.

If you want to make it an MC out thread do that. Though we're living in a glass house, perched on the edge of a precipice, surrounded by f**king elephants.

I don't know if 'MC out' is really an appropriate angle. It's not like he's a coach doing a bad job. He's the owner and stepped into the breach when we were facing folding.
He's poured large amounts of his personal money, time and energy into the club and none of it for any tangible personal profit.
There's also no alternative that is foreseeable. No one is lining up to buy the club. MC himself said he welcomed investors if they were interested. What happens if he leaves? We fold.

Maybe the only realistic call from us fans is 'New strategy please MC' (which I'm not calling for, I just think we need a couple more experienced players added to the roster otherwise I'm very happy with the way things are going)

I thought a Chinese Property Developer was our latest saviour? ;)

Only in case the Russians fall through, but we all know that they're almost there... Just another couple of months maybe...

(Wonder how much it'll take for us to reignite THAT story actually ;-) )

Whatever happened to Phantom? He seemed to have all the info on the Russians.

Didn't he get upset when we didn't just blindly accept the claims about the Russians?
I seem to vaguely recall it escalating into a discussion about how people have left in the past and how he felt that it was no wonder because none believed the insider stories.
I could be wrong and if so, my sincere apologies to phant0m - but i can't be bothered looking for it right now and that's what my memory is currently suggesting to me at least ;-)

I doubt this was leaked by the PFA. My general exoperience is that such comment is leaked by player agents. It did not say anybody was leaving just that the unpaid super could be grounds for players to break contracts and leave. Make no mistake either way there will be player that wants to go, it is purely speculation on who it is, however, where there is smoke ther is fire. Taking into account history it seems that CCM would not stand in someones way aka Mooy and Melb city.

Right at this moment if Charlesworth leaves (I assume the meaning is if he removes himself from the ownership of the club), then we don't have a club -- where else are the operating funds coming from. I know the players' salaries will be paid, but there's a lot more than that to be paid. Will FFA take over the club? I doubt it and if they do, they'll almost certainly move it to the Shire. Don't know about the rest of you guys, but I don't want that. If we keep on slagging MC, he may well say "Bugger this for a joke" and chuck it all in. Then where will we be?

IMHO he is up there with any of the other dubious owners that have inflicted themselves on clubs.

He didn't save us because he loves us, he wants his money back from the coe

Fortunately there are always working peoples entitlements to use as cash flow when you need it.

Says everything about him

This is what I really hate about these kind of club issues. Understandably always causes grief among the fans and pits us against each other pending level of cynicism vs optimism.

So be great imo if we didn't start ripping chunks out of each other again.

The truth is all perspectives on this shit are possible - because we cant really ever know.

But I trust Cockerill more than most and if he thinks the FFA would be happy to ditch us. And Monty credits MC wirh saving the club - then i won't be part of any calls for MC out.

But that doesn't mean we can't ask fair questions or express reasonable concerns be it about playing roster or unpaid super or what have you.

Then its up to the club to communicate with us, its members, so we dont see monsters where there aren't any or blindly walk off any cliffs, get whipped into panic or manipulayed by journalists or when we're having hard spells lose hope.

This year with Shaun coming on here, Storrie talking frankly (i think) and TW being so available and candid - it has been by far the best communicstion members have ever had. But it is a bit quiet now, when it would be really nice to hear something directly. Not via Seb Hassets twitter feed or what have you.

Look forward to the podcast.
