Central Coast Mariners figurehead Peter Turnbull has left A-League club

CENTRAL Coast Mariners figurehead Peter Turnbull has left the club this morning, seven months after handing ownership of the Mariners over to fellow shareholder Mike Charlesworth.

Mariners staff were dumbfounded to learn the news this morning, with a formal announcement likely to come this afternoon.

However, it's unclear who will run the club on a day to day basis once Turnbull leaves at the end of the week.

Originally a director and investor in Sydney FC, Turnbull - a successful property developer - had bought into the Mariners in 2007, and become majority shareholder and chairman.

He was instrumental in Graham Arnold's arrival in 2010, but struggled to fund the club after the GFC hit his own businesses. Charlesworth joined as a co-director in 2010 and in April assumed full ownership, jettisoning long-time CEO John McKay and moving Turnbull into the role.

Despite his financial troubles, Turnbull sunk a huge amount of his time and several millions of dollars into the club, at considerable a cost to his own family.

Sad to see PT leave the club after all he has done.

Something serious is happening here.
Not necessarily! It takes a lot of character to hand (sell) a business to someone due to financial strife and then hang around and put your heart and soul into "running" the club under someone else's directive.

I take my hat off to PT, he bleeds for the Mariners. And before any criticisms fly in, I agree he hasn't been perfect in anyway but he's done his best!

Turnbull completes tenure with Mariners
Thursday, 28 November 2013 1:00 PM

Central Coast Mariners wish to confirm that Mr Peter Turnbull will conclude his time as Group General Manager of the Club on Friday following six successful seasons with the reigning Hyundai A-League Champions as an investor, Chairman, and chief of the Club’s administration team.

Mr Turnbull joined the Mariners in 2007 with the vision of transforming the Club into one of Australia’s most successful sporting organisations, and creating a community hub in Tuggerah via the ambitious – and ongoing – Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence plan.

Since joining the Mariners Mr Turnbull’s financial and emotional investment has helped the Club enjoy not only success in Australia’s top flight and the AFC Champions League, but complete phase one of the legacy-leaving, impressive Centre of Excellence development.

With credit to Turnbull’s vision, the Mariners now have an established training base in Tuggerah, as well as a thriving community-focussed centre enabling football players of all ages to enjoy the sport at the impressive Soccer5s facility.

Mr Turnbull said that he has enjoyed some of the happiest moments in his life over the past six years he has been involved with the Club.

“It has been a thrilling ride to watch this Football Club become the Club of choice for all talented young players in the country,” Mr Turnbull said. “We have achieved so much, and it has been a privilege to provide opportunities to players of the calibre of Tom Rogic, Mathew Ryan, and Mustafa Amini, and others, as well as coaches like Graham Arnold and Phil Moss, who built on the wonderful foundations that were initially set by Lawrie McKinna, Lyall Gorman, and John McKay.”

“Our Football Club has shed the “little Club” tag, and is now one of the dominant Football Clubs in the country. On the ‘all time Hyundai A-League table’, the Mariners proudly sit first infront of Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory.”

“I still expect to be at every game, and will be cheering the lads on as they look to emulate the success we have regularly enjoyed. All of my family now either live or work on the Central Coast, and I know how important this Club is to the region. I’d like to urge everybody to get behind Mike (Charlesworth) and the Club as they look to continue the Mariners legacy.”

Mr Michael Charlesworth thanked Mr Turnbull for his exemplary service, passion, and investment into the Club, and noted the reasons behind his official departure.

“This was only ever a temporary solution as Peter has substantial business interests elsewhere,” Mr Charlesworth said. “He now has opportunities in his normal business which require his full-time attention.”

“Peter has been instrumental in bringing about the changes we needed, and we owe a vote of thanks for his financial investment as well as his devotion to the Club.”

“Peter leaves a legacy as an original founder of the Hyundai A-League. He and the Lowy family owned 25 per cent each of Sydney FC in the early years, however he saw his preferred model of a community Club being establish on the Central Coast with the Mariners.”

“Peter should always be remembered as the first outside investor in the Mariners, and as a man willing to commit his personal dollars in the game for the benefit of football in Australia.”

Tracy Southern will take on the position of Acting General Manager until the end of the year. A new Chief Executive Officer will be appointed in December, and he or she will commence with the Club in January 2014.

Implies that he was given any choice.................

Well, we now have a dictatorship. No board, no voice to rein him in. We will become the laughing stock of the game until the end.

We are the new GCU, I await the announcement of a crowd cap or stand closure before he shifts us

Christ!... Just as I was coming down after the whole NS move thing, here I am, back under my desk, curled up in a ball, breathing into a brown paper bag... I'm hoping that they've just decided to get all of the bad PR out of the way in one fell swoop...

FB comment suggests Cass Palasty's gone too (Merchandise & Logistics Manager). Are they having a good old fashioned purge in there? Anyone heard from Pokes?

Will the last one out please turn out the lights?

Saw that. Heard from pokes this morning, didn't mention anything, just spoke about the dangers of removing nail polish whilst driving.

Stop stirring and find out the facts.

This decision was made months ago during the changeover of ownership. PT agreed to stay on as COE for a period after the handover.

This sort of stirring is what leads to division and disharmony.

At least one other staff member is gone too. In the absence of information, people (quite reasonably) speculate and draw their own conclusions.

May be wrong, but in the absence of any apparent notice (staff were apparently surprised!) it seems like it was less than planned or at best appallingly poorly communicated.
