LOL. Girl takes no shit!

The Central Coast is a different place since before the Mariners.

I felt in the space of just one season the Mariners had become a unifying force within the Central Coast and it was appropriate the the cover of the region's next phone book was adorned with the team. It didn't take long for merchandise to be regularly seen and the doing up of Gosford in yellow and navy before the home leg of the minor semi was amazing. Had they not been as successful in year one (and to a degree if the grand-final hadn't been nearby in hyped-up Sydney) perhaps the identity wouldn't have eventuated.

But then the now defunct CC Rays won their now defunct comp without creating any identity. I'm guessing their community engagement was minimal compared with the Mariners.

I think there is a regional pride coming from seeing our team, our region, our stadium portrayed in national (and soon Asian) media.

There are unwanted effects of the identity created too. The now noticable hatred of Newcastle is largely a post-Mariners thing.

Yep, the Mariners have definately raised the awareness of the Central Coast. This should increase with ACL coming up, depending on how we do to what level though. The fact we had Bozza keeping for us is another factor that would have raised awareness on the Central Coast...

From the perspective of the southern part of the Coast (i.e. Woy Woy Peninsula), the Mariners have certainly made changes in the way people view the area. Spike Milligan once described Woy Woy as "the largest above-ground cemetary in the world". Now however I don't believe we are just looked on as "waiting for God", but we are also seen as a young community with plenty of interests for our young people, including a vibrant "soccer" community. Nearly every second kid I see around here is wearing Mariners gear of some description. I have even seen some wearing a League jumper with a Mariners cap!
From a personal point of view, I and my wife moved up from the smoke to be with our children & grand-children, but my interests were still in Sydney. However, after one of my daughters and her husband introduced me to the Mariners, my outlook has shifted dramatically to one centred on the coast. I now take a lot more interest in the community in which I live instead of the one in which I work (I still work in Sydney).

Jess,

In response to your question yes the Mariners have created an identity for the Central Coast.

I moved to the Central Coast 17 years ago when i was only 2 months old. Until the Mariners came along in 2005 to say you came from the Central Coast to other people wasnt anything to be proud of becasue people didnt know anything about the Central Coast, it was your either living in Sydney or Newcastle. I have lived and travelled to many countries around the world and when i was doing that people ask you where you come from and you tell them that you live on the Central Coast, Australia and most of them think you mean the Gold Coast in QLD. But this of course was before the age of the Mariners. I still have contact with a number of my many friendships that i have been luckily enough to involve myself in overseas and due to the Mariners i dont have to explain for 30mins where the Central Coast because the Mariners have created an identity around the world about the Central Coast and that will continue to grow in 2009 with thier involvement in the AFC Champions League. And today i am proud to say that i live and have grown up on the Central Coast the Home of the Central Coast Mariners.

The Mariners have well and truly created an Identity for the Central Coast

Hey Jess
I have lived on the Central Coast for all of my life except for 2 years spent in Sydney. The Mariners have lifted the profile of the central coast and raised awareness of its location etc however i dont think thats just what you were looking for were you?
In relation to giving an identity they have certainly done that. When i was a child the Central Coast had an amazingly high suicide rate, drop out rate for school and crime rate. Now of course all these things still happen but the first time I have ever seen pride on the Central Coast was when we made the first GF against Sydney. The first time we had something to cheer about. Due to our not getting big name players we have built a reputation of using Central Coast local players and we have become the hard working underdog of the competition which I believe has transfered to the region. Money, pride and passion have finally come home to a beautiful place where it has been missing for a long time.
I hope that answers your question.
