The men drew 1-1 against North Shore Mariners this afternoon (with #TBT scoring), remaining in 5th behind SFC, Bankstown City, Mounties and WSW; their next game is at Pluim Park next Saturday night at 6pm hosting Marconi.

The women lost 2-1 to Southern Branch in Nowra, remaining at the bottom of the ladder; their next game is at Pluim Park next Sunday hosting Nepean FC.

Looking at Wanderers results in all grades, they will smoke this comp.
I'd say the Smurfs will be the ones going up this season.

Going into this round they were 8 points clear of WSW in the Championship, and look to have held that lead with wins across all grades this round.

ACADEMY WRAP: Mariners Derby ends 1-1

It was a Mariners derby in the PS4 NPL 2 at the weekend that saw the North Shore Mariners host the Central Coast Mariners Academy who played out a 1-1 draw at Northbridge Oval.
North Shore Mariners 1 (Marquin Smith 29') Central Coast Mariners Academy 1 (Trent Buhagiar 71')

With the Central Coast coming off a win last time out, Ben Cahn's team was looking to finish the round out in the top three.

North Shore started brightly and had a good chance to take the lead in the fifth minute when a contested cross was spilt by Coast keeper Adam Pearce, who recovered smartly to save the follow up.

The away team had a good chance in the 17th minute when Nathan Hundley played a smart ball over the top to Trent Buhagiar who blasted his shot from outside the 18-yard-box just over the crossbar.

CCMA had an encouraging chance two minutes later when a smart run from Josh Bingham down the wing was played to Buhagiar. Buhagiar flicked onto Lachlan Wales who pulled the trigger first time that was saved by the North Shore keeper.

Central Coast took the lead in the 29th minute when a great cross from Wales was sweetly hit first time by Buhagiar from just inside the penalty area into the side netting leaving the North Shore keeper no chance.

Bingham went close to doubling their lead in the 58th minute when Buhagiar made a great run down the wing and then squared his ball to the top of the box but Bingham’s shot was just wide.

North Shore Mariners leveled proceedings in the 77th minute when a cross from their winger found the head of North Shore attacker Marquin Smith.

The home team went close to a dramatic winner in the 85th minute when a great through ball over the top was hit from the edge of the box, but Pearce made an impressive save to avoid danger.

After what was a tense final few minutes both teams couldn't quite find the winning goal and the game finished 1-1 despite North Shore finding the net in the 95th minute, only to be disallowed by a foul in the box.

Head Coach Ben Cahn was happy with how his young side competed against a much more experienced North Shore Mariners outfit.

“Our first grade side is made up completely of under-20 players but we also used three or four others from our actual under-20s that managed to survive a pretty physical encounter against an experienced team full of players with much more experience than ours,” Cahn said.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t hang on, the goal they scored was probably the clearest chance they had. We had a couple and punished them with one early on. It was a similar story to our season so far, we usually create enough chances to win games but we’re just having a bit of trouble converting them.

“Trent was able to exploit them, he was dangerous throughout. He was probably our biggest threat, but Liam O’Dell and Reece Papas were pretty resilient too.

“There were some pleasing aspects to the performance. I have had massive doubts whether our team could cope with experienced physical sides but today we showed that we can still grind out chances in games like that and we can still be resilient defensively. Ultimately we missed two very, very good chances and their goal was probably the only clear chance they had all day,” Cahn said.

Very entertaining game to watch. If we took our chances early on I think it could have been a different result. Sensational goal by Papas!!
Next week I think kick off is 1pm??

Ryan Peterson bags a brace in nine-goal thriller!

The Central Coast Mariners Academy hosted Marconi Stallions on Saturday evening that saw the two sides play out a 5-4 goal-fest at Pluim Park.
Central Coast Mariners 4 (Liam O’Dell, Reece Papadimitrios, Ryan Peterson 2) Marconi Stallions 5 (Marko Jesic 2, Mirjan Pavlovic 2, Simon Valastro)

The Mariners started brightly and nearly had the opener after just two minutes when a curling shot from Lachlan Wales from outside the box forced the Marconi keeper into a crucial save.

Marconi had a good chance in the 5th minute when Marco Jesic brought down the ball on the edge of the 18-yard-box, who then turned and forced Pearce into a smart save high to his right.

After a flurry of early chances it was Marconi who took the lead in the 30th minute when a turnover from the Academy in their own half was capitalised by Jesic for the opener.

In the 49th minute the Academy equalised after Josh Bingham was fouled in the box and Ryan Peterson belted home the spot kick.

Less than a minute later, the away team responded and Jesic had his brace to put his side a goal up.

The Stallions had a great chance to go 3-1 up in the 54th minute but it was Pearce again who saved well low to his left to deny Sean Rooney from just inside the box.

Marconi went 3-1 ahead in the 61st minute when Simon Valastro headed home a corner.

The Academy hit straight back in the 64th minute when a cross from Brian Jamba was cleared straight to Reece Papadimtrios. Papadimitrios pulled the trigger first time and his strike from 25-yards out flew home for what will be contender for goal of the season.

Marconi scored again in the 66th minute when Pavlovic scored his first of the night from close range to put the visitors ahead 4-2.

The Academy hit back again in the 71st minute when Ryan Peterson’s shot from outside the area found the top corner via a deflection to keep the Academy in it with the score at 4-3.

CCMA had a great chance in the 77th minute to level the game at 4-4 through Buhagiar but his shot was just wide.

Marconi went 5-3 ahead in the 82nd minute when a ball was squared to Pavlovic who finished from close range and made the game seem all but over for the Academy.

But Academy weren’t about to go down without a fight, hitting back in the 85th minute when Liam O'Dell’s shot from the side the box was struck low and hard across the goal and into the bottom corner to make it 5-4 with five minutes to play.

Despite CCMA's efforts in the last five minutes, Marconi held on for an entertaining 5-4 win.

Head Coach Ben Cahn said that his side dominated the early stages of the game but despite creating three golden opportunities, were unable to capitalise. “We should’ve been 3-0 up,” Cahn told Football NSW, but instead, Marconi held a slender 1-0 lead at halftime.

“Individual error cost us the first goal and we were pretty naïve in how we managed the game,” the Mariners coach added. “Once we got back on level terms, we gave them a goal straight away from kickoff, then we went 3-1 down. We came back to 3-2 and an individual error cost us for 4-2. Then it was 4-3 and we missed an absolute pearler of a chance when Trent Buhagiar missed a one-on-one and pushed the ball wide of the post. They went up 5-3 and we just couldn’t find the last one.”

But regardless of Marconi’s quality, Cahn said his young side didn’t defend well. “We didn’t defend well at all. Not from the front, not from the midfield. Ultimately when you concede five goals at home, you deserve to lose the game.”

Despite the loss, Cahn his side scored some excellent goals. Former Marconi player Ryan Peterson grabbed a couple against his old club, Josh Bingham was a presence the whole match and Trent Buhagiar’s speed caused problems for the experienced Stallions. “I thought that we looked like scoring every time we went forward, but unfortunately we’re just missing the finishing touch at the moment.”

The Central Coast Mariners are back in action next weekend vs the Western Sydney Wanderers Academy at Valentine Sports Park, kick off: 9am for u18s, 11am for 20s and 1pm for first grade.

Interesting to see that Adam Pearce started ahead of Tom Heward-Belle. Looks like there is a big battle between them for number one youth keeper.
