FORMER Socceroo Mark Bosnich says it would be “nigh impossible” for Wellington Phoenix to remain in the A-League via a merger with an expansion contender.
Following
his report in the Herald Sunthat Wellington’s owners had held discussions about selling their license to at least two of the expansion candidates — Southern Expansion (based in the St George, Sutherland and South Coast regions) and South West Sydney — journalist David Davutovic expanded upon the details.
Davutovic said he expected the South West Sydney group to formally submit an offer for a controlling takeover of the Phoenix in the coming weeks — with a merger among the scenarios being discussed.
“They’ve certainly thrown a lot of scenarios around — whether it’s a potential merger and potentially playing some games over in Wellington and some games over in Sydney or Campbelltown, all the way through to obviously a controlling buyout where obviously they would play most if not all of the games over in the south-west of Sydney,” he said on Fox Sports’
Shootout.
“So look, talks will continue and more will come out in the wash.”

But Bosnich said a team splitting games between Wellington and Australia simply wouldn’t be feasible, and it was time for the “New Zealand experiment” to end.
“I don’t like any clubs either being relegated or put in the comp just based purely on metrics,” Bosnich.
“But I think it has come time — and I feel very sorry for the players and I’m sure the players will be picked up by A-League clubs — just to admit that the New Zealand experiment has not worked.
“They’re not even part of our confederation, they should have their own tournament in my opinion ... I don’t understand how then they could possibly play in Wellington and play in South Western (Sydney) — that’s going to be nigh impossible.
“You can’t (build a fanbase), this is what I’m saying — I feel so sorry for them in one way but another way, like I said, I wasn’t around when the A-League was first started but I don’t understand, like I said, there’s only nine teams (in Australia).
“So if you were born in Wellington, New Zealand, you’ve got a far better chance than somebody who’s born in Wollongong, Australia, of playing in the A-League. For me, that’s totally wrong.”
Bosnich said expanding to a second division and introducing a promotion and relegation system needed to be a priority.
“So far as I’m concerned wtih the expansion teams, they decide on two or three — it doens’t really matter - the other teams should be put in a second division and then we should start rolling on with promotion (and) relegation within three years’ time,” he said.
Expansion contenders have until May 24 to submit an expression of interest to FFA, with the shortlisted bidders to be confirmed in June.
The Phoenix finished second-last this season and had a tumultuous time off the pitch, with coach Darije Kalezic parting ways with the club before the home and away season was out.
Star signings Dario Vidosic — along with his father, Rado Vidosic — and Gui Finkler both departed Wellington earlier in the season.
