I've been critical of Mike in the past as you'd have heard on my earlier pods. But I've always been thankful to him for keeping the club alive.

Absolutely this though. Peil hired several ‘middle management’ positions on quite decent money, most of whom have now departed, and rightly so.
The GF winning squads were built off the back of a successful academy side (built by the likes of Schembri, Monty, Christiansen et al, when MC was at the helm), who were turfed by our previous overlord. Further outstanding club persons in Dan, Shaun, Gabby, Iain, Brice, and even Abbas Saad were turfed/pushed away by Peil for whatever reason.
Our Head of Performance, Brice, who kept the side fit through our most arduous and gruelling season, was replaced by a bloke who lives in Melbourne, and apparently the players can count on one hand the amount of times they’ve seen him in person! Feel for Cade, our current S&C, who is doing the best he can with a program written by someone 945km away.
Player-wise, we lost Hally, Niz, Maxi, Vuka, Faz etc - all the players who came in to replace them (with the exception of Faisal, who I think has been quite good), arrived under the stewardship of Peil, but yet many decry the ‘lack of spending’ by MC as our downfall. We were also in for Wales in the window, he turned us down (for the third time) to take big overs at perth, and Max Burgess also turned us down to stay at Sydney - if you don’t want to be here, we don’t want you, and why should we pay massive overs to get you in?
People are quick to pin recent failings on MC because it’s easy to do, but it ain’t it.
It’s kind of telling in a way that MC brought Shaun back in as a consultant to fix what was left from Peil’s sudden departure.
