The make up of this year’s Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 is confirmed after the final two entrants were decided in South Australia and the Northern Territory over the weekend.
Seven clubs, including four from leagues below the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues, will make their maiden appearance in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds as the competition enters the stage when the ten Hyundai A-League clubs join the fold.

The seven new clubs are New South Wales trio APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Bankstown Berries & Hills United, Queensland’s Moreton Bay United & Peninsula Power, Olympia FC Warriors from Tasmania and WA side Western Knights.

Notably, three clubs (Queensland’s FNQ Heat and New South Wales pair Blacktown City & Sydney United 58 FC) have become the only Member Federation sides to qualify for the Round of 32 every year since the Westfield FFA Cup began in 2014.

The last two clubs to book their spot in this year's Round of 32 were MetroStars, who will make their third straight appearance in the Final Rounds, and Darwin Rovers FC after they prevailed as the Northern Territory's entrant for the second year running.

The match ups for the Round of 32 will be determined at a draw to be conducted at 3pm (AEST) this Thursday (29 June) at FOX SPORTS studios in Sydney. The draw will be hosted by FOX SPORTS football personality Tara Rushton and conducted by former Socceroos captains Peter Raskopoulos and Charlie Yankos.

The draw will be LIVE on Fox Sports News (Channel 500) and streamed online at www.foxsports.com.au and www.theffacup.com.au.

The Round of 32 draw will see the Hyundai A-League clubs placed into one pot (Pot A), with the Member Federation clubs placed into another pot (Pot B).

The order of the draw, will see balls pulled out of the pots in order to firstly determine the three (3) all Hyundai A-League club matches and nine (9) all Member Federation club parings before the intriguing four (4) Member Federation club v Hyundai A-League club fixtures.

The 16 matches in the Round of 32 will be held over three weeks with four matches per night across four match nights (either Tuesdays or Wednesdays) beginning in the last week of July.

FOX SPORTS will show 11 matches LIVE (one match per match night) while providing coverage and updates as well as LIVE streaming of all non-broadcast matches. Details around the FOX SPORTS broadcast and streaming will be announced closer to the start of the Round of 32.

With the Round of 32 draw almost upon us (June 29, live on Fox Sports), #MagicOfTheCup tragic Aidan Ormond offers his top Cup moments in the tournament’s three-year history. Here’s the top six!
Aido's top 12 Westfield FFA Cup moments: part 1

6: Demons’ goal extravaganza caps incredible comeback in Sydney Derby

Lilys Football Stadium witnessed an extraordinary clash, where home side Blacktown City beat Sydney United 58 FC 6-2, with four of the goals – all for Blacktown – coming in extra-time.

In fact, Sydney United 58 had led 2-0 after just 13 minutes!

5: Danny Choi goes viral

Going viral is one of the Cup’s killer marketing tools – so just sit back and enjoy the majesty of Choi.

TV stations couldn’t get enough of this footage as his 70m howitzer helped defeat Sydney United in an extraordinary eight-goal thriller.

4: University student Love slays mighty red and black

A few months later the Wanderers were to make history in front of 60,000 in Riyadh in the ACL – but little known Thomas Love, just 18 and a Uni student, channelled Maradona from 1986 with a breath-taking individual effort for Adelaide City to knock the mighty Wanderers out in the Round of 32 in 2014.

3: Liam Boland goes viral, too!

The big man with the big smile lit up a cold winter’s night in Melbourne’s western suburbs with a moment of sublime skill to slay an A-League opponent.

Liam Boland's long-range stunner in added time gave Green Gully a famous 2-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners, the 24-year old beating veteran goalkeeper Ivan Necevski with a memorable strike from 40 yards.

2: Redlands rock the Reds

An NPL club beat the reigning A-League champions!

It was trending immediately after one of the most extraordinary nights in the Cup when Brisbane club Redlands made history, stunning reigning A-League champions, coming from a goal down to win 2-1 at a heaving Perry Park in Brisbane.

1: South Springvale kick-start Cup fever in Oz

The Aris boys! Who could forget them? South Springy embodied the spirit of the Cup on the opening night back in July 2014. At the time I wrote... 'Melbourne’s self-described “pub team”, from the third tier of Victorian football, were thrust into the national spotlight after a breath-taking shootout victory over South Cardiff in the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 on July 29, 2014.

The fans, the drama of the game, the whiff of souvlaki over the suburban ground Kingston Heath: it was a night to savour and one that set up the FFA Cup as something truly unique in our sporting landscape.'

Rani Dowisha became an instant sensation with his penalty shootout save to win it for an exhausted Springy.

The Cup’s magic had been sprinkled over the Aussie sporting landscape. Other codes could only sit back and admire.

Hashtag #MagicOfTheCup was trending like crazy. Our part-time footballers were the talk of the town.

Australia was hooked.

And guess what? It’s all set to go again in July. The draw happens on June 29, live on Fox Sports.

What will be your Magical Cup Memory in 2017?

Did you know last year’s FFA Cup round of 32 clash between the Bonnyrigg White Eagles and Manly United was delayed by 15 minutes because Manly coach Paul Dee – who had the side’s playing kit in his car – arrived at the ground late due to traffic congestion?
With the draw for the Round of 32 this week, check out these other top facts from the 2016 FFA Cup round of 32…

· Brisbane Strikers skipper Michael Angus was left at the team hotel with illness, but his side went on to beat Rovers Darwin 6-0 at Darwin Football Stadium, including three goals in six frenetic first half minutes.

· Defending Hyundai A-League champions Adelaide United were beaten by the second-oldest club in Queensland, going down 2-1 in extra-time to Redlands United at Perry Park, Paul O'Brien supplying the winner.

· Liam Boland's long-range stunner in added time gave Green Gully a famous 2-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners, the 24-year old Western Australian beating veteran goalkeeper Ivan Necevski with a memorable strike from 40 yards.

· A record Westfield FFA Cup round of 32 crowd of 8029 turned up at WIN Stadium in Wollongong to watch the Wolves go down 3-0 to Sydney FC, with Matt Simon scoring twice.

· The highest scoring clash was at Lilys Football Stadium where home side Blacktown City beat Sydney United 58 FC 6-2, with four of the goals – all for Blacktown – coming in extra-time. In fact, Sydney United 58 had led 2-0 after just 13 minutes!

blacktown-city_1mbsw8cw2pjba1ut73j80aflm1.jpg

· On his first team debut, striker Lachlan Scott steered Western Sydney Wanderers to a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 win over fellow Hyundai A-League side Wellington Phoenix at Campbelltown Stadium, scoring twice in an eight-minute burst either side of half-time.

· Former Hyundai A-League striker Mirjan Pavlovic was booked, scoring a stunning goal and missed a shoot-out spot-kick as his Marconi Stallions went down 4-2 on penalties to Hume City FC after the scores were locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes and 1-1 at the end of extra-time.

· Having scored just six times in 103 Hyundai A-League appearances, defender Dino Djulbic netted twice in seven minutes to hand Perth Glory a 2-0 away win over Brisbane Roar.

There’s a quote, ‘good things come in threes’, and for Football Federation South Australia’s Round of 32 entrant it is proving to be spot on after they reached the Final Rounds for the third year running.
MetroStars are gaining a reputation of being a clutch big game team that knows what it takes to win when the stakes are high.

They relish the big stage and will now prepare for a third consecutive crack at a magical Westfield FFA Cup run.

MetroStars are one of three FFSA clubs who have featured in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds, along with Croydon Kings and Adelaide City, the team MetroStars beat on Saturday night in the Round of 32 decider.

2016 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Bentleigh Greens 3-3 (4-3 on penalties) at Elite Systems Football Centre, Angle Park

Lowdown

MetroStars’ 2017 Cup campaign almost ended at the first hurdle as they were forced to pull a rabbit out of the hat in their opening Preliminary Round match against fellow PS4 NPL side Adelaide Olympic.

A first half hat-trick by Olympic’s Christos Pounendis saw MetroStars down 3-1 at half time and staring at an early exit. But Liam Wooding’s second half brace tied the scores and that’s the way it stayed through extra time before the home side scraped over the line 4-3 on penalties.

From there, the further the Preliminary Rounds went and the bigger the games became, the more MetroStars grew in confidence. One needs to look no further than when MetroStars won three straight matches away from home against the best PS4 NPL teams in WA, Victoria and NSW on their way to being crowned PlayStation 4 NPL 2014 Champions of Australia as evidence of their resolve and ability to perform in clutch situations.

In their record of Westfield FFA Cup Final Round matches, MetroStars’ two past losses have come against PS4 NPL opposition from Victoria, while their solitary scalp was a noteworthy one, a come from behind 2-1 away win over New South Wales powerhouse Blacktown City in 2015.

Names in MetroStars’ current squad that could be familiar to those outside of the City of Churches include former Adelaide United duo Adam van Dommele and Fabian Barbiero, while striker Liam Wooding also spent time on the Reds’ youth list. But there are a host of others that have played crucial roles in MetroStars’ rise to another Round of 32 berth, and if they go deep in the Final Rounds there is a fair chance we’ll be hearing a lot more about them.

Last but certainly not least for the final feature on this year’s Member Federation Round of 32 entrants is Football Federation Northern Territory.
There were a host of tense, close fought matches throughout the Preliminary Rounds in both Darwin and Alice Springs to get to the final showdown of who would represent the Northern Territory in this year’s Final Rounds.

In the end, the club progressing to join the ten Hyundai A-League clubs and 21 other Member Federation clubs from around the country is the same one as last year. How will they fare in 2017?

2015 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

2016 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Brisbane Strikers 6-0 at Darwin Football Stadium, Darwin

Lowdown

For the second successive year, Darwin Rovers FC will represent the Northern Territory in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds.

It is an impressive achievement for a club that was only established in 2014 and comprises of a squad predominantly of tradies.

To mark their first venture into the Round of 32 last year, the team famously turned up to the stadium in a stretch hummer organised by limo driver, DJ and goal scorer Simon Bell.

The club, whose home colours of green and white mirror those of Scottish club Celtic, endured a tough initiation into the world of the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds last year as they were on the receiving end of a 6-0 drubbing by PS4 NPL Queensland outfit Brisbane Strikers.

It is no secret that this year is going to be a tough ask again for whoever they draw, but you certainly cannot write the team from the Top End off from causing an upset, particularly if they are again drawn at home and have the warmer climate and the local support on their side.

Darwin Rovers FC currently sit fifth in the seven team Darwin Premier League.

A David and Goliath match-up between Darwin Rovers and the reigning Hyundai A-League Premiers & Champions, Sydney FC, is among a host of highly anticipated Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 ties after the draw was conducted earlier today by former Socceroos greats Peter Raskopoulos and Charlie Yankos at FOX SPORTS in Sydney.
The other three ties pitting a Member Federation club against a Hyundai A-League club sees 2015 Quarter Finalists Heidelberg United host Perth Glory, Peninsula Power from the Brisbane Premier League face last year’s Westfield FFA Cup winners Melbourne City FC, and Blacktown City against the Central Coast Mariners.

Two Round of 32 debutantes will meet with former NSL powerhouse club the APIA Leichhardt Tigers heading to Tasmania to take on Olympia FC Warriors.

Other fascinating all-Member Federations ties include South Melbourne drawing the Edgeworth Eagles, while it’s all PlayStation 4 NPL Victoria blockbuster as Hume City and Bentleigh Greens, two former semi-finalists, go head to head.

For skipper Matt Lewis, Blacktown City’s match-up against Hyundai A-League outfit Central Coast Mariners in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 holds extra-special significance.
Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 draw revealed

Lewis played 15 games for the Mariners between 2009-11 and will now try to help his side to a huge upset when the competition begins next month.

City, who made the quarter-finals in 2016, is one of just three PS4 NPL clubs to have made the Round of 32 in every year of the Westfield FFA Cup.

BRING ON THE FORMER CLUB

“It couldn’t be any better. I’m very excited about paying against the old team,” Lewis said.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been at the club…a lot of the players I used to play with aren’t there anymore.

“But I’m very excited and I’m sure everyone at Blacktown is buzzing too.”

CAN CITY CAUSE AN UPSET?

“Fingers crossed. I feel like we back ourselves against any team.

“Any team we would have pulled out of the hat we’d be very confident to go ahead and do a job.

“I can’t wait. It’s only about a month’s time now. I’m very excited for when it comes and I’m sure the boys we’ll be too.”

THE FEELING OF SCORING AGAINST HIS OLD CLUB

“It would be awesome to score a goal.

“I haven’t scored a goal all season. It would be perfect timing if I could get it in this game.”
