we didn't fade out, instead gained intensity and only conceded 1 REAL goal. promising result for a loss

Draw in the other game, so we're only 1pt behind second. Better result for Beijing as they've taken a point away.

Showed a bit of spirit though, and could've scored with a little bit of composure. Not many 'good' performances, but not much bad either. For a team that were beaten finalists in this competition in 2013, I'm OK with that result.

The test will come when we're playing at home. Whatever the result, playing to not lose will not be acceptable. We either belong in this comp or we don't, so we should be playing to win our home games.

It was the result I expected so that's fine.
I'm happy with the improved performance, against A-League opposition I think we probably would have won. Promising for the short term.
Fitz, Seip, Bernie all had good games as did a few others.

My one request for future acl games: can we PLEASE have a ref (or linesman in this case) who hasn't put a sly couple of grand on the other team winning ffs. We seem to get this absolute borderline corrupt bull$π|t every acl

Strange game. Seoul clearly in control and deserved winners yet could easily have been a 1-0 win for the Mariners. Seoul's goals came from a soft penalty and Seoul being clinical straight after Rose fluffed his lines at the other end. I wouldn;t have given a red but can understand it being given.

I would have been very happy with a draw - but given recent form I expected a lot heavier loss.

Home is Where the Seoul is
The Asian Champions League is a tough gig: the team arrives in Seoul tired from an eight hour flight; they try to relax in icy conditions; they eat funny food. They play a team that has a budget the size of that of New South Wales; a team which reached the final last year; a team brim full of pace and technique; a team with a Spanish-Argentinean whose skills stand genuine comparison with Tommy Rogic.
They fight bravely; they stand up to be counted; they fight the good fight. Just when it seems they have walked through the storm with their heads held high comes the killer blow. The one force they cannot counter: the ‘homey’ referee. The home side in its home World Cup stadium plays the trump card of the ‘home’ officials. It is big club, little club syndrome: seen all around the world.
Half an hour has gone by, and the Liam Reddy inspired Mariners are just beginning to find their feet, when an innocuous challenge by Josh Rose is adjudged a foul by the referee’s assistant. The smiling referee politely concurs and is more than happy to reward his hosts with a penalty. Welcome to Asia, Central Coast, and thank you. The fact that the shot hit the post but went in added to the frustration.
The goal was of course no more than Seoul deserved: they had dominated play and barely allowed the Mariners, wearing a bizarre strip of stripes, bars and squares, a touch of the ball. But, when your goalkeeper has produced a world class save, and your centre backs are taking all the punches like front rowers in State of Origin, you always maintain the hope that something may happen; you have the right to believe in miracles. The goal killed off that dream; it killed off the game. There was only ever going to be one winner from that point.
Outclassed and outplayed, the Mariners at least staged something of a fight back early in the second half but Rose wasted a great chance, and then Bernie beat three men but his cross went unrewarded. Five minutes later Seoul scored an absolute beauty; Escudero’s deft pass unhinged the defence and quick, slick passing gave Il Lok the chance to slam the ball past Reddy.
Seoul were simply on a different level; only Reddy stood between them and a rout. He took centre stage: a super save, one handed to his left; then standing up one-on-one to an attacker, and then doing it again; defying the Koreans in a manner that won the approval of coach John Crawley. And then another extraordinary back bending save from a fierce shot on the right.
Duke came on for Bernie and made a lively contribution; Seip blotted his brave performance with a clumsy high footed challenge which earned him a straight red; Caceres came on for Kim but like Kim got barely a touch.
Matt Simon ran so many miles I reckon he would probably have run all the way back to the airport. The Mariners never stopped working, they didn’t give up, they were brave and committed throughout, but failed all game to test the goalkeeper; Rose has their only chance to do so. The Mariners defence was always under pressure; the midfield could not cope with the quickness and accuracy of their opponents. Even a Montgomery grapple tackle could not stop Escudero who was wonderful to watch.
Liam Reddy is my MoM; I think he will need a very relaxing muscle rub after this: downtown Seoul is just the place to provide it.

Pasfield who's been good in every game (exept the scum rd 4 away game) I've ever seen him play in

Waddya talking about? He was visibly shakey and lacked the confidence and composure that Reddy has been showing. Reddy makes many great saves and appears to communicate well with his defenders, has been a great team player, and is one of the top three or four players we've had this season.

Happens every ACL. AFC refs don't like the biff.

Definitely agree. Australian football has a reputation of being physical, and the opponents really seem to milk it in the ACL. 2 + 2 equals a lot of penalties and fouls that wouldn't be called in the A-League.
Mind you, I thought the ref slackened off us a bit after the pen. Thought Fitzy's yellow was a bit harsh, but the ref seemed to stop buying into all of the falling over FC Seoul were doing.

That last 10 minutes when we were a man down was some of the best football we played the whole match. We looked like a burden had lifted, and we tried to do more. Sure, they sat back a bit, but we actually had some desire and confidence. Also, the forward third needs to take a few weeks off training and just practice scoring goals.

If our front office wasn't spending so much time trying to save rugby league & cricket grounds in sydney they might of bothered ringing some potential SPONSORS.

Actually was a little unimpressed by FC Seoul. While they were good they weren't Evergrande good. To loose to evergande on away goals I was expecting a real flogging as that evergrande side were awesome last year. They dominated us for a 5 min wave & then looked in ept. Hade some quality just not as much as a expected.

Serious concerns about that linesman. He'd already taken off to the byline before the ref blows his whistle.

Sieve was good in first half. Aggressive actually attacked the ball. As I was realising I might have to give him an apology he doesn't let me down in the 2nd. Ball watching on the 2nd goal (although it was a great dummy) & a typically bad timed tackle late in the game. While not a read in my eyes.

Defensive structure was good but bloody hell we shit at passing.

Comment from 442 forum - 12 passes now between the CB's without a long ball. Tika Taka Gosford style. Had to laugh at that one.

Our offense is shithouse which stresses out or decent defence over 90mins.

The AFC are running a campaign to root out time wasting.

"Don't delay. Play".

Good initiative. Can't stand the floor rollers.
Not doing a good job. Some Seoul idiot rolling around for 5 mins in the first half gets up eventually walks to the sideline rubs his own head like your dad would & jumps straight back on.

To be fair it's the best part of the ACL. Nothing fires up the Bluetongue quite like an asian rolling on our grass

Rough night for storm as well. Taken apart at the back & hounded on the attack. He looked horrible when given no space in attack. The pressure on him caused quite a few turnovers.
Keep learning kid

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
Once AGAIN f**kin ACL refs have bent us over....hope that liney got a good return in his account from his bookie...and that red was ridiculous...a yellow AT BEST
still think we shoulda played Simon & Dukes...imagine the panic that woulda caused ( although one of 'em woulda probably been walked for giving a dirty look to a Seaoul defender) AND they gotta get the ball to Kim more...did he get more than 2 or 3 touches? ...is it a language thing I wonder? ....the body language of the two managers was remarkably different...the koren manager was waving his arms and shouting on the edge of his zone...and everytime i saw Mossy, he had his arms crossed or in his pockets
