ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

His Fotmob stats are awful

He's 2nd this season. Sure, we're shit this season but an avg rating of 6.98 isn't 'awful'.

Here's Leo Sena's, so Alfie is better at aeriel duels, shot attempts, goals, shots at goals and defensive actions?
Compare him with any number of centre mids - Caceras, Brattan, mauk, verstraete, thurgate, alagich, O'Shea, machach, hollman

Not just on futmob but actually the impact they have on games.

All rate higher than Alfie - as they should.

Do you honestly think kuol and Steele have been almost 7's on average? Or mauragis? Or Theo? So obviously the ratings they give are pretty soft. Even doka at 7.26 is a stretch.

He's definitely no temu Ronnie, he is our best current midfielder and I think he could do well in a decent side. But for a visa player he has been disappointing in a disappointing side.

Comparing Apples to Oranges isn't a good comparison to make

Can you say Alfie's defensive actions didn't stop a potential goal?

Yes. Give me a reason as to why they shouldn't be. https://www.fotmob.com/faq lists how the come to their conclusions as to how people get given ratings.

For example:
Fotmob Ratings
The FotMob player rating is calculated based on more than 300 individual stats per player per match from Opta. A match in the per match ratings is any match the participant has been involved in even if he came on as substitute in the last few minutes. A player must have played at least 50% of all matches and at least 90 minutes (for the per 90 stats) to be included in the rankings.

Defensive actions
A sum of tackles, interceptions, clearances, blocks and fouls to indicate how much a player is involved defensively.

So you agree he's our best midfielder, I agree.

They are literally all central midfielders. How is it apples and oranges? It's not like I compared a striker with a defender.

Can you say Alfie's defensive actions didn't stop a potential goal?
By that logic every defensive action stops a potential goal. every time kaltak played a shit pass to an opponent that interception stopped a potential goal. Every header from a long goal kick stops a potential goal. Kuol blocking a long clearance by a defender stops a potential goal.

You can count just about everything. Counting a single event doesn't tell the whole picture. Winning a header on halfway counts the same as winning a header in the box to deny a goal - both are winning duel but they aren't equal. A tackle on the sideline on halfway isn't the same as a covering tackle in the box to stop a striker shooting - but they both count as a tackle for the stats.

I'm sure Steele and Alfie have a high % for passing completion. The fact that the platform doesn't distinguish that it was backwards or sideways means that they are not as effective as the algorithm makes out.

Clearances are part of defensive actions. In reality a player could stand there like a witches hat with the ball pinging around while other players attempt tackles or blocks and when the ball fortuitously falls to them they kick it over the sideline. Count 1 for defensive actions but they haven't been effective in play, just got a lucky outcome.

So you agree he's our best midfielder, I agree.
Our best midfielder. It's a pretty low bar. But to suggest he has been a great signing is not true. He has been steady but well below what should be expected of a visa player. He doesn't get near other midfielders across the league in terms of contribution.

Its important to watch football with your eyes, not just stats and counting certain events. Lukaku has more international goals than both Maradona and Ronaldo (original). Using a stat based model that makes him better than both of them - obviously that's just ridiculous.
