ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

The things we miss

So our team looses a lot of young players who do you wish we could have kept.
My top 3: Simon, Perez, Jedinak.

Pondeljak wasn't young, but you know what I mean.

I don't miss Perez at all.

That's Tommy Rogic (I'm assuming he's gone - not Tommy P - though I do miss him.)

I *didn't* love Perez. The moment I realised it was when Amini played that amazing game against Perth at the SFS in 2010 and we got to see the contrasts between the two.

Perez would receive the ball gracefully, turn and jink and dance and look for a magic pass.

Amini was a quite different proposition. Move, receive, touch and pass. Move quickly to the next pass. It's less 'graceful'. It's less pretty. It costs a lot more energy and sweat. But golly it's effective.

How effective relies on the contrast between the styles - Amini moves the ball so quickly the pass is still available. Perez would linger, and in the time he's lingering and looking pretty and drawing admiring eyes, disciplined and organised defensive lines would quietly close up all the passing options.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who liked Amini more than Perez. At the time, I put it down to owning a great Amini 'fro wig :)

I think Simon's departure was the one that had the greatest detrimental effect on our season. I must admit though, it's neck and neck with Jedi's departure.

Now that I think about it, Jedi's leaving had the single biggest effect on our season whereas it was Simon AND Griff combined that stuffed us around.

In Jedi's last game we went (temporarily) top of the league but didn't win another game that season and went out of the semis in straight sets.

When Simon and Griffiths left the club, we won the league. We only lost the prelim on penalties.

Yes, I agree with you. I didn't know how to phrase my opinion correctly that's why I used the quite lame "stuffed us around".

From my recollection, whilst we did win the league, I had the feeling that our momentum was lost with the departure of Simon and Griff and I, personally, was never confident about our chances in the post-season cup.

Jedi's leaving has a particularly bitter taste in my mouth. Ally and I were about to come home from Europe at the time - we missed the derby win on boxing day (followed it on WAP updates from a hotel in Vienna), we missed the NYE match (followed from an internet cafe in Florence) and flew into Sydney on I think the 4th or so, went to the game on the 10th and the remaining games and we didn't win a sausage.

And the ACL games.

And the active support scene was in the process of blowing itself to smithereens at the time, and it only got worse the following year while we had the worst squad in the club's history.

Jedi leaving was the start of some of the worst times (on and off the park) that I can think of in the history of our club.

Agree, Jedi leaving gutted the side.

Tommy P is probably my favourite ever player but I get why he left us.

Hmmm

Jedi,
Musti
Matty

Obviously Gumps.

I hugely enjoyed Perez's cameo and know he could have been legendary with a bit mote ticker. I miss Griffo but feel Monty is an ample replacement. I miss Wilko but actually feel Tesco is a better player.
I miss Mori....that old boy was classy.
I know some of you love Tommy P so i'll be controversial and say I don't think we really missed him.
Matty Simon has been sorely missed.
Oh and Mrdj of course......jokes!

I miss the Nik Mrdja that showed up for pre-season of season 1... 2 hat tricks, looked awesome just calmly walking around defenders to slot goals home... should have done more but we all know what happened.

The player I miss the most is Matty Simon.. He bled yellow! What really irks me is that his departure was just as his game was picking up and he was scoring goals! Loved his never say die attitude, seeing him get kicked around the park to get up and chase them down only to lose his compsure and get a yellow for some silly tackle.. oh matty.. haha! I was working overseas when he played his last game, perfect send off for him, just wish I was there to watch.

Would have loved to see more of Amini, after signing with BVB he didn't get much game time as it seemed he was being protected from injury..

Also would have loved a whole F***ing season with Rogic.. This does kind of piss me off.. if we don't get him back on loan (like Amini) then other than the good pay day for the club I think this is going to disrupt out season the most.. ARNIE IS GOING TO PLAY PELLERS!!! I can't stand to watch him play.. He always looks nervous and jittery on the field.

. i am pretty sure arnie has had a re-think on that plan ... as evidenced in the last couple of games. as a minimum he has mcbreen and the wee-man as better alternatives (but some of that may depend on who else we lose)
