Boca, Rangers line up for Sydney FC
May 10, 2010
SYDNEY FC are on the brink of announcing one of the highest-profile friendly tournaments in the world this pre-season after finalising agreements with Rangers, Boca Juniors and Blackburn Rovers for a four-team event in July.

The tournament would turn a low-key month into a blockbuster for the Sky Blues, who are also hosting Everton at ANZ Stadium on July 10.

The deal has not been finalised, but the Herald understands all four clubs have consented to their involvement, which became a reality over the weekend when Rangers pulled out of a proposed friendly clash against Celtic in Boston.

The A-League champions are hoping the marquee fixtures will help them to not only boost their membership numbers but to further stake a challenge to Sydney Rovers, due to enter the league in 2011-12.

''We would have preferred to keep it secret until it was finally confirmed and the tournament organisers could say this great news was over the line, but yes, I can confirm that it's very close to being done,'' chief executive Edwin Lugt told the Herald last night.

''We're very excited about it.

''We're expecting to have everything sorted out by the end of the week - it's just a matter of a few details - and from what we understand, all four clubs have agreed to come here, which is fantastic news.''

The deal is being brokered by former Sydney Swans player-turned-agent Craig Nettelbeck. ''Our strong preference is for the match to be played at our home ground [Sydney Football Stadium],'' said Lugt, who also confirmed the club was now committed to bringing out a major European club each year.

Meanwhile, the Herald can reveal Sydney will kick off their A-League title defence with a grand final rematch against Melbourne Victory at the SFS on Saturday, August 7.

This would be pretty massive if it goes ahead on obviously (even on top of the Everton game), but I'm curious..... would people for example travel down from Gosford for something like this?  Even if its not necessraily 'their' Euro teams?

Word is it will be played as 3 double headers for a round robin, Sunday/Wednesday/Sunday

Even if it is only the like of Blackburn, surely there would even be appeal among the vast population of Sydney (and elsewhere) eurosnobs for something like this?

Would not miss a game. Would probably be the best month or two of football (potentially) we have seen in Aus for some time when you throw the Everton games in on top.

Don't blame them - that couldn't have ended well.

I really hope this goes ahead, watching Blackburn in the flesh without having to leave the country. Yes please.

Not a big fan of pre season friendlys even when my teams are involved although I would go if it was my team.

No interest in our rivals games whatsoever.
