I managed to score a couple of free tickets to the Jets v Roar match last night.
Here is a modest report:
Weather: Mild
Ground: Surface was excellent, but then I suspect there has been no Thuggery league played there for some time. The stadium is still a building site with two corners a mess - still, good to see they are improving things. The section that was a mess during our visit is now finished - about ten tiers of seating with a big box-like building behind it housing the new change rooms. On top of the 'stand', demountables\shipping containers still seem to be the fashion for food stalls, etc.
TIFO: Apart from a desultory couple of lame flags that looked suspiciously yellow and navy, the TIFO for which they set the standard at the Grand Final was notably absent. In fact apart from some waving of scarfs in unison at the beginning there was zero TIFO.
Vocal support: Very quiet indeed. Admittedly there was not much to sing about, but even in positive moments for the Scum, the atmosphere was extremely subdued, and the Squadron were next to invisible, both in terms of vision and sound. That was a surprise, considering that my seats were right on the edge of the Squadron bay. The only thing the coming from Bay 2 was the usual bogan smell, but in hindsight that was probably the nearby drain. The song sheet was basically down to two half-hearted chants - the always lame 'New Car Sales' chant and the one syllable 'Jets', clap, Jets, clap, Jets' sung very slowly so that they had sufficient time to decide whether to say 'Jets' or clap. Most of the 'singing' came from a couple of drunks in Bay 3.
Game: Never raised itself to any great heights in the technical department, although the Zura layoff to the C@#t for the Jets goal was nicely done. There was a vast difference in quality between this match and ours v Bling FC. This was purely mid-to-low-table fare.
Crowd: Good numbers considering the Roar section was limited to about 3 families.
Highlights: Watching the crowd get excited early over a non-goal. Watching a big punch-up between two boofheads in Bay 4. Watching the Scum lose.
Summary: On this effort I would expect the crowds will dwindle as the Scum remain outside the top 4. A short season for the Champions.
Postscript: The local media coverage was aweful. It should be a major worry for the A-League that our competition was buried in the local TV news under all other sports and even a bigger article on the Thuggery League pre-season training.
