Glory timing their finals run

Perth Glory coach Dave Mitchell feels his team is hitting form at the right time of the season.

With three games to play in the regular season, Perth are fifth, just one point off the Newcastle Jets in fourth, and two points clear of Wellington in sixth.

Weve put ourselves in a good position with two at home and one away, Mitchell said.

This Sunday, the Glory hosts the Central Coast Mariners (7th) in a match described as a mini-final.

For us its a big game, if we win, it just about assures us of a finals spot.

Its also a big game for Central Coast and they probably shouldve won last week with the performance they put in.

Striker Daniel McBreen has been one the reasons for Perths recent run with two goals from two starts and the coach could not be happier with his decision to release Eugene Dadi

We brought some new faces in at the right time and theyve added a bit of a spark to the team and theyve been great, theyve lifted everyone and now weve got a bit of depth in the squad and thats what weve always been after.

There were a lot of people speaking about the Eugene scenario but for me he didnt work hard enough and he wasnt a team player.

Everyone can see Daniel McBreen puts his heart and soul into it, even though hes not going to be with us next year.

"Thats just the character of the guy.  He works hard for his teammates and hes scoring goals, which is fantastic.

The Glory have won three and drawn one from their last five games but Mitchell does not believe his team is playing their best Football, just yet.

No, a few people think that.  I think at the start of the season we played some great football, then hit a bit of a bad patch but we are coming good again but certainly not at our best yet, Mitchell said.

With Boogs out and Heff gone, our back 4 is likely to be:

Porter Wilko Doig Clarkie

Porter dropping to RB isnt good but I cant see an alternative really - opens up a slot for Travis at RM.

Personally, would start Kwas at RM

Who would you put on the left? Hutch?

With Heff gone it's only really Hutch or Kwas on the left, McGlinchey can't play there IMO.  Would you play Lewis there in such an important game?

Maybe revert on 4-3-3? Except Simon can't play on the right hand side of a 4-3-3

I take your point but based on his recent appearances I wouldnt start Travis.

Lewis is someone I would certainly consider at LM. Hutch does better in the centre.

Not happy with fullbacks of Porter and Clarkie - maybe Pedj could do one. Put simon out on the right to force Sekulovski to stay deep. Pedj and Huct to close down Sterj.

Travis in behind Mrdja.

Smitta---Wilko---Doig----Pedj
Simon-----WeeMac---Hutch---Kwas

That looks like a 4-2-4 to me.

Rather see Pedj at RB as it keeps him out of midfield :)

+ 1, definately struggling in attack lately and his passing game has been way off

Pedj has played RB or RWB plenty of times in his career, but none of them recently, playing there is a totally different type of preparation and style of play, IMO now isn't the time to move someone into a position they haven't played for a long time, When Pedj moved to CB this season personally I believe he had a poor game as he's been used to training in CDM, some players like Jedi can adapt to such change but Pedj I'm not convinced would.

Long term (as in next year) perhaps Pedj moving to the right would be better considering Boogs is moving on and Porter is a better player in midfield.

Simon RM is a joke surely? He can't play up front at the moment what makes you think he could play there? He can't exactly cross the ball too well?

Edit - we need Simon to re-find his confidence up front if we're even a chance to make the finals

He has played there before when he was not a first choice striker.

He didn't pressure anyone in defence as a striker last week until the 59th minute. He needs to work some more. His pressure used to get us turnovers - now he just doesn't do the work. Also having him there as an outlet will take pressure of Mrdja and also serve to keep Sekulovski back - stifling one of Perth's attacking outlets.

Mrdja is good with his back to the goal and someone nippy like Travis might work better than Simon and Mrdja have.

If this is the case we are indeed in trouble. He not only is not in form up front - he isn't even contributing for large parts of the match. By playing him on the right he will probably get more clear touches on the ball - and may run into some form.

Form aside *cough* that looks alright, but leaves a slightly uninspiring bench based on recent performances.

macallister
crowell
simon

mebbe one of them might rise to the occasion....

Trouble with that is it quickly becomes 451 as the wide mids are pressed back leaving Nik on his own

We will go a straight 442 IMHO (4321 would be better but as Deej says not the game ot experiment)

My squad ... we need some clam on the ball ... so I have put Crowell & Huke on the park & left the forwards the same and hope Matty can come good...

................ Danny...

...... Porter (RB) .... Doig..... Wilko ....Huke (not on team sheet)

Travis ....... Wee Mac ..... Crowell ....... Hutch

........... Mrdja... Matty

If Huke is unavailable then Pedji to replace..

Currently in Perth and its hot! Weather for the match is expected to be worse. So it could be another hot one for the boys.

. with a 4 o'clock local kick-off ... all the more reason to have simon and travis on the bench rather than starting imo
