Moss, Crawley join Mariners Coaching Staff

The Central Coast Mariners have today announced the addition of Manly United Head Coach Phil Moss to the clubs coaching staff as an Assistant to Head Coach Graham Arnold for the next three Hyundai A-League seasons, while current goalkeeping coach John Crawley will also take on an increased role with the club.

Were delighted to welcome Phil to the club, said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

Phil has done an exceptional job during his time coaching in the NSW Premier League and has a strong pre-existing relationship with both Graham (Arnold) and (Assistant Coach) Tony Walmsley, and we are certain he will become an integral part of one of the A-Leagues most successful coaching staffs.

Moss came through the ranks at Manly United before making his first grade debut at 17, and enjoyed a season at the Central Coast Coasties in 1997, ironically alongside his new colleague, in Mariners Head of Sports Science Andrew Clark.

Moss then made his mark in the old National Soccer League under Arnold as a defender cum midfielder at Northern Spirit via a short spell at Eastern Suburbs, before ultimately returning to his old stomping ground.

I started at Manly when I was in the Under 10s, born and bred on the Northern Beaches and it will be a very emotional day for me on Sunday, my last game in charge, but I dont see it as the end of the book its just a new chapter, Moss said.

I never rule out returning to Manly one day down the track but it is time for my coaching career to move into the professional ranks, and I dont think I could have landed at a more professional and ambitious club than the Central Coast Mariners.

Moss has also had experience in the National team environment, assisting Arnold during the successful qualification campaign for the 2008 Beijing Olympics with the Qantas Olyroos.

Im very grateful to Arnie for the faith hes shown in plucking me out of the State League.

Theres a lot of talk of ex-Socceroos coming back from overseas and being fast-tracked into jobs which is fantastic, but I would like to think this appointment is a win for the ex-NSL players who have done the hard yards in the local leagues, said Moss.

Crawleys new three year contract as the clubs goalkeeping coach will also expand, where he will mentor the clubs two current custodians Danny Vukovic and Mathew Ryan on a full time basis, as well as compiling detailed video analysis of all of the Mariners A-League performances as well as opposing sides, as the club continues to expand its technical and sports science department.

Head Coach Arnold is excited by the potential of the coaching staff.

Everyone is full time and Id like to thank the chairman, Lyall Gorman and the club for backing these appointments, as we give our squad every opportunity to be as successful as they can be. Im delighted to have everyone on board, said Arnold.

At the risk of being called a grumpy old man (ok, I am one) Manly are currently 11th, or second last in the NSW Premier League.

Not a word about our apparently previous Assistant (and Socceroo legend) Alex Tobin - not very classy CCMFC!

Yay..... more Spirit connections.  :-\

Kev - perhaps Arnoldout has realised how shit he is and is thus surrounding himself with those worse off than he so he doesn't look as bad.  Or something.

I'm not quite sure if this is serious or sarcastic. Assistants are not there to put pressure on the coach but to compliment him. The last thing you want is for your coach/manager to feel pressure from within his ranks. There will be enough of that from outside our club and also from us and management.

Also reults from '08 and '09 were 4th and 5th respectively which both resulted in finals and last year they had the lowest goals conceded.

TBF this season, 5th place is only 5 points in front of Manly and it is quite close amongst the bottom 8 clubs with the top 4 a fair way ahead.

As for Tobin, if he does not continue in some shape or form with us, he will warrant his own media release seperate from the announcement of a new assistant. I am sure that the club will get this right

Anyone know what quals crawley has ? wonder if he has done any video analysis training.

He was our keeper in Hal 1... he has a special way of side kicking the ball from the penalty box... he could target a player on the field and almost pass it too them from essentially a punt kick...from memory he had been playing in South America were he learned this unique kicking style ... he got injured early on in Hal 1 and a young Danny got the nod and Crawley was he goal keeping trainer... others could add more I am sure...
