Wellington Phoenix appear to have no shortage of candidates for their vacant coaching position, with the club aiming to have their new man installed by the end of April.

Having advertised the role this week, the Phoenix will have the likes of interim coach Chris Greenacre, an as-yet unnamed former Real Madrid player and Central Coast Mariners assistant coach Phil Moss among those to consider.

Englishman Greenacre has been in charge since Ricki Herbert's resignation on February 26, with the former Tranmere Rovers striker drawing improved performances - including a 1-0 win over Melbourne Heart in Week 23 - since stepping up from his assistant role.

He revealed after Phoenix's 2-1 loss to Western Sydney on Sunday that he was warming to the idea of the full-time role: "I am just focusing on the last two games, but I admit that I've really enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about myself," he said.

"… You do get a taste of it and maybe start to want it a bit sooner than you thought, but for now my job is to get the best out of the team for the next two games."

The identity of the former Real Madrid player has remained a mystery since his interest emerged last Friday, but ETI Sport Management - the Australian agency representing his interests here - confirmed to Goal Australia that he had coaching experience elsewhere.

Moss is likely to be one of several Australian-based coaches to apply for the Phoenix role, but the 41-year-old's stocks are high after proving an integral part of the Central Coast Mariners' successes of recent seasons under head coach Graham Arnold.

Phoenix general manager told The New Zealand Herald on Saturday that the A-League's bottom club had fielded interest from all over the world: "We certainly want to get it done ASAP, but at the same time we want to make sure that we aren't making a rash decision," Dome said.
"We want to make sure that we take all the appropriate steps to get the best possible candidate for the role because it's absolutely hugely important and crucial to the future of the club to appoint the right person."

Hutch will be off to Asia next year to cash in. I suspect this is why they gave him a 2 year contract, to get a transfer fee.

It adds up, his name was mentioned in the Jan window as a possibility and at the time of the signing they were saying what a great club man he is. He is a great club man because he signed the 2 year contract knowing the club would benefit when he moves rather than a lot of the other player agents telling the players not to sign in case they get an o'seas offer.

If Mossy gets it it will be a good test: if he is successful he can come back and take over from Arnie in a year or two :innocent:

Has Mossy actually applied? The article seems to imply that he will, not that he has.

Edit: Just re-read it, and realised a mis-reading. Nothing wrong with me a good kick in the head won't fix!

Quite possibly ruben de la red...ex Spanish international...only 26 years old
Been coaching junior teams in madrids youth academy
A few madrid fans are hoping he coached our 1st team one day
This guy is all class...was better than busquets
But he had a heart defect and retired from football...giving busquets an easy run to Spain's first XI

Lol, so Wellington will be playing the long ball option. Great way to move a club out of the dark ages, sign a coach who only knows one way to play.

I wonder what the future holds for Mossie. He obviously wants to be a head coach sooner rather than later. I would've thought the sensible progression would be that when the time comes, he takes over from Arnie and brings Patrick in as his assistant. With time, Mossie moves on and Patrick takes over as head coach.

However, quite possibly he follows Arnie to his next, much bigger, gig. This may not be such a bad move. Assistant coach at a bigger club could advance his career quicker than being head coach at CCM.

The other thing is that Patrick may be the "anointed one" when it comes to the next head coach at the Mariners. Certainly, there was a lot of the talk when he announced his retirement seem to indicate that his progression to head coach is a mere formality.
