Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

Yeah heard that - they also had to work out whether to call it soccer or football (seriously, who gives a shit, just pick one and get on with it) and then asked Ollie about the NRL and AFL grand finals... what about talking about the Mariners and the A-League? They might as well have asked him about the Commonwealth Games or who he thought should have won Top f**king Model.

Have always said ... Star ... was the wrong move .. when we had 107.7 they talked about the Mariners... and football... Star IMO are a RL first station ... and I often get the impression they do the football ads because they have to ... but when talking about RL you can here the joy in their voices .. maybe I am getting old ... but we should go back to 107.7 or GO for the older people..

Agree whole heartedly. Worse move they ever made was to change the station they use. Seems to me that the change has been reflected by the reduction in numbers attending the games. I would suggest that they change back as soon as the contract is complete - if not sooner.

does the choice of radio station *really* matter that much?

i'm kinda surprised that there's any form of exclusive relationship with any station but all the same i can't imagine it being so terrible as to be causing the poor crowds etc. when frankly every club in the league is having the same problem.

Dunno really, but it can't help when they are talking to a Mariners player about anything but the Mariners. They sound like they are so uninterested in the A-League they need to talk about AFL and NRL instead. Like they were wondering if Hutcho would be allowed to watch the end of the AFL grand final, because it should be just finishing up as the Mariners kick off, and Hutcho is a big Collingwood fan.

If they can't talk about the Mariners the whole time, how about at least something to do with the A-League and not AFL/NRL? It just gives the impression that the A-League is so boring they can only give it a quick mention and then move on to more interesting things. Why should I go watch the Mariners when I can watch Collingwood thrash St Kilda with Hutcho instead?

I also agree that who ever IS doing it should be focusing wholey and soley on the Mariners & the A-League, this is where the difference between 107.7 and Star differ. Would be great to see the DJ's actually do some research into the game and know whats going on with players not only in our team but throughout the A-League... injuries, suspensions etc and how it will effect the coming games. 107.7 dedicated alot more to the game, where as Star want their finger in he pie all year round... NRL broadcasts live on Sat arvo's for the entire season throughout winter as well as doing the Mariners stuff during summer. There's just that sketchy bit of the cross over at the beginning & end of repective codes where it's a problem.

I have a feeing the Mariners thought going with Star they'd get more of the younger audience involved as thats basically their target audience, hence boosting the numbers a bit. I can't exactly remember the 107.7 crew doing halftime stuff and give aways, but I don't think Rod & the Flack do a bad job of it.

Just my 2c worth on the topic.. ;)

If the kids are allowed on but only if the playing surface is not damaged ... then it is not a security issue although I still think they will want parents to find their kids... if not a security issue why could this not become more wide spread... kids allowed to run on after every match as long as they wear soft shoes..

I was up in queensland last week and missed the Fury game. But i did go and see the Roar Hearts game at Suncorp. I enjoyed the the pre-game build up which is done by two guys sitting at a table on the sideline talking about the A-League in general and the Roar in particular.

They did a sideline interview with one of the injured ROAR PLAYERS. They knew what they were talking about and asked good questions. Also in the entertainment side for this game there was a 100 meter sprint between the players representing the local clubs. They had a couple of heats before the game and a final (worth $1000 to the winner) at half time. The players were in their club strip and the crowd got into the final.. The small sided games with the kids were still there at half time.

Also there were many teams from junior clubs having their end of season celebration watching the game. All the teams regsistered beforehand and were recognised on the big screen and welcomed by the sideline commentators.
They have an animated Roar logo that they use to advantage when using the big screen. All in all it was a very polished pre-game build up and one that the Mariners could look at and add some professionalism to our pre-game build up.

I would much rather this than the celebration of idiocy and bad hygiene that is the the Flack's stock in trade. Damn - I'm starting to sound like my father - I really have become a COF

TBH ... I would love to have someone like Marrinermick to do the build up .... he is good on the local radio and understands both football and our crowd...

Cheers for the kind words but I am quite happy doing what I am doing. Doing analysis after each play is far different to revving up a crowd.

Is it just me or does Wilko (ground announcer - not captain) not look like he sounds he would?

I was thinking this too it was awkward seeing the guy who speaks to you actually on the screen. Almost like the deep-voiced guy who narrates the previews for action movies.

I agree too that 107.7 would be the better way to go as well. Aren't 101.3 and 107.7 the same station essentially too? I remember when the Mariners first began their marketing drive I was hearing it all over the radio on both stations. Now they've agreed to terms with only one station, however popular it is, it has to decrease the level of exposure you are presenting to the community. And the RockStar at the game is just weird. Contrasts well will Marvin though who is just awesome.
