That's great. I hope Con gets the boot soon so they can get a decent team and add some value to the league.

Jets crash out: title defence officially over
BY BRETT KEEBLE

Source: Newcastle Herald 27/12/08

NOTHING will make up for losing the A-League grand final to Newcastle last summer but ending the Jets' title defence must go awfully close.
Central Coast Mariners did just that with a 2-1 victory over their F3 rivals in a typically spirited, often spiteful derby at EnergyAustralia Stadium last night.

Two goals in the space of 13 minutes turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 advantage for the Mariners, who would have taken great delight in sounding the final siren on Newcastle's season.

The Jets remain rooted to the bottom of the ladder on 15 points, four adrift of seventh-placed Perth (19), who have a game in hand, and eight behind fourth-placed Melbourne (23).

Not even the maximum 12 points from their final four games against Wellington, Adelaide, Perth and Sydney would be enough to resuscitate the Jets as they would also need a miraculous series of results from other games to go their way.

Even Jets coach Gary van Egmond acknowledged the finals were out of reach, saying their focus was now on avoiding the wooden spoon and preparing for their Asian Champions League campaign.

"Yes, I believe so," van Egmond conceded.

"I think now they [Central Coast] are on 25 points. We're 15, 10 away, with four games to go. Barring a minor miracle, it's definitely over.

"But we don't want to finish with the wooden spoon so there's obviously an incentive there, and there's obviously our preparations for the ACL."

In yet another controversial finish to a Newcastle game this season, Mariners striker Dylan MacAllister was red-carded by referee Peter O'Leary after a physical confrontation with Jets marksman Joel Griffiths after the final whistle.

It is understood MacAllister was dismissed for using abusive language towards another player.

Several players from both sides ran in to join the melee and Mariners striker Matt Simon was also shown a yellow card as O'Leary and his sideline officials struggled to take control.

Even Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna stepped in, barking at his players to back away and leave the field as the incident, and the result, spoiled Jade North's final appearance for the Jets.
A likely season-ending knee injury to striker Marko Jesic and a worrying ankle injury to defensive midfielder Mark Milligan are just the latest episodes in a season of setbacks.

Van Egmond said his side invited the Mariners back into the contest by not finishing off their opportunities in the first half, and another couple early in the second.

"Realistically, the game should have been well and truly buried earlier on ... and if you keep letting Central Coast back into the game, they're going to penalise you," he said.

As for the injury to Jesic, van Egmond said the initial prognosis was not promising.

"It's unfortunate. We're hoping that it's not the worst but it doesn't look good. That would be his third one, which is a real shame for the young fellow," he said.

"[Milligan] has done his ankle pretty bad. I'm not too sure if it's grade one or grade two but he's in ice at the moment."

Goalkeeper Danny Vukovic was the villain of the Mariners' 1-0 loss to the Jets in the grand final in Sydney in February when he was sent off in the final minutes for man-handling referee Mark Shield.

But he redeemed himself with an outstanding performance at the back last night, regularly denying the Jets from close range.

Mariners striker Sasho Petrovski hammered home a header to equalise in the 66th minute then Simon made it 2-1 in the 79th.

Dean Heffernan curled a cross in from the left wing and Petrovski, who had muscled his way into the Newcastle goalmouth, powered the ball past a helpless Ante Covic.

Simon, who had replaced Andre Gumprecht in the 52nd minute to give the visitors some attacking punch, shook off the challenges of Jobe Wheelhouse and Adam Griffiths on the edge of the box, stayed on his feet and angled the ball past the outstretched Covic.

Milligan limped off in the 72nd minute and James Holland took his place. Holland, back from a trial with Dutch powerhouse AZ Alkmaar, started on the bench as Jets coach Gary van Egmond stuck with the same starting side that beat Melbourne 4-2 last week

Spot specialist Joel Griffiths drilled a ninth-minute penalty to give the Jets the early advantage against their grand final rivals but they could not extend despite some gilt-edged scoring opportunities.

Striker Marko Jesic, who signed a one-year contract extension earlier this week, earned a penalty for Newcastle in the eighth minute when he held the ball up in the box while backing into Gumprecht.

Central Coast's bad boy dragged Jesic down just inside the by-line at the northern end of the ground, O'Leary deliberated for a few seconds, then pointed to the spot.

Griffiths stepped up and blasted the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Jesic's night ended in misery seven minutes later when he left the field with a suspected torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which has already been subject to two reconstructions.

Petrovski and Jets defender Adam Griffiths also incurred yellow cards.

* The Mariners beat the Jets 4-2 in the Youth League curtain-raiser.

How did it happen that way?..
He didn't have a physical confrontation, Griffiths did with Hutcho (I think)..
They are making Griffiths look like an innocent bystander.

But he is. He's the Andrew Johns of the Scum. He can do NO wrong in their eyes. I'm sure the scum think the AR actually tried to teabag Griff, rather then griff try to sack whack him.

GOOD. I wait with bated breath to hear of a career ending injury and a chaotic off field dilemma leading to an arrest in London in possession of prohibited substances, and a public airing of his 'mental health' issues to gain sympathy. ;) ;D

FFA would turn a blind eye.

It's Joel, their super-talented, potentially-world-beating golden boy whose only downfall could be his own dick-headedness and lack of intelligence.
His career must be protected from any self-inflicted derailments at all costs.

I'm glad I changed my forum name.

This was the best derby victory.
Come from behind, we go top and seal their non finals fate.

I'm still feeling that good buzz you get after a great victory.

Sorry Jorome, I was going to include a special apology for you until I remembered that you have changed your name recently.
