FOOTBALL Federation Australia today revealed their latest sponsorship deal for the local game.
The three year multi-million dollar agreement sees beverage manufacturer Schweppes become the Official Non-Alcoholic Beverage Partner of FFA, all national teams including the Qantas Socceroos and the Westfield Matildas as well as the Hyundai A-League, the Westfield W-League and the National Youth League.

The Goal of the Year will be known as the SOLO Goal of the Year, and FFA's 5-a-side schools program will be known as the Cottees 5-a-side program.

"This is another very good day for FFA," said FFA CEO Ben Buckley.

"We are delighted to announce this new partnership with Schweppes and we appreciate their support for our ambitious plans to be the sport of first choice for players and fans particularly through the new Cotttes 5-a-side schools program."

Buckley said that football has had the highest participation rates of any sport for boys aged 5-14 years for more than a decade and is also the fastest growing team sport for girls with an average annual growth rate of more than 6% over the past five years.

"There are many children who also enjoy playing the game at school, and particularly as they follow the Qantas Socceroos journey to participate in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa over the next 18 months or so," he said.

Other brands associated with the partnership include Gatorade (sports drink) and Propel (fitness water of the Westfield W-League).

In the past 12 months, FFA has negotiated new or renewed partnership agreements with Qantas, Hyundai, Westfield, nab and Optus.

They've signed with a company who is losing ground hand over fist, the only chains they have are the two they own...KFC and Pizza Hutt, and who are in uncertain times at the moment, having just been bought by a Japanese beer brewer who doesn't currently have anything to do with CSDs. They've lost the PGA as well...which they've had for 20 years, they lost Oportos last year as well, and have shrunk the size of their infield sales force as well. Not a good proposition. I can only assume that our boys dropped the ball, and either didn't put a proposition in, or just didn't put much time and effort into it. Which would be unusual. I dunno.

Not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying because the sponsor is not the best softdrink company in Australia we should not take their money. Further that football only should have top  sponsors .... not sure whether I agree SOLO is not an unknown brand in Australia and in the economic world today getting on board new sponsors actually says a lot to the broader business community that Football is OK. Most would not have your level of understanding of the drink market... and again if they part with the coin and into the 5 a side stuff .... seems to me to have plenty going for it.

Oh I'm all for taking the coin if they're happy to give it, but I would have thought they'd be wanting a top sponsor rather then a company who's not in the best market position.

And again...I have no idea what, if any, proposal we put to them.

DOn't get me wrong, if they're giving us coin, lets take it and use it to build the game, and I hope it does put out to other companies in other industries in the Australia that football can be invested in...and I think having Hyundai, Qantas, Ballantine (which I've not gotten around to trying yet) etc as primary sponsors would help more then the new deal.

I dont think we care if they are 1st or 2nd in their field. If they want to pay more for it take them. It is the decisions from 1st in fields to not go for these deals which can cost them market share.

How are Schweppes supposed to become a bigger company without putting their name out there? Who bigger to be associated with other than the FFA, who benifit from the coin. I see nothing but good things in this deal.

It now makes sense why there were cans of solo on display at the Mariners Medal Dinner last night.

I agree, FFA wins regardless, I'm just surprised is all. But then I know we've committed heavily to other projects recently as well..Oportos and PGA for example.

I'm glad we have another major sponsor thgouh...I just hope the money gets put where it needs to be.
