Matt didnt rule out signing with the Mariners, said the deal was still on the table. Did say he wont be going to Asia. But sounds like he may go to Melbourne Hearts. Said a decision would be made today.

Yes we need him, it would piss off scumcastle so so much (who better then their captain). Then we can say to them 'Ha! your captain can't even make our first team!'

It would be a little bit funny

Matt Thompson is a good player, not exceptional, but would rather him than Ahmed Elrcih in my team.

He'll sign for Heart though I would imagine, we might have cap space available next year but Heart have the whole cap available at the moment and if they really want him will outbid anyone.

Heart, 3yr deal.

Some funny stories about his negotiations with CCM, I don't know what to believe. But he's definitely gone to Heart on a wage that suits his value IMO (as opposed to the atrocious offer made by Con. Note - a payrise is useless if you're still pitching well below the market rate - idiot).

I don't believe he's worth the reported $200k per year, but then the press make up their own figures as we all know, even if it's $150k I think you could sign better for less.

I also heard CCM only offered a 1yr deal?

TBH I don't believe either of those stories, they both seem to be extravagant. I've little doubt Heart were able to show the money (as can any club with the full cap to start with), but I doubt anyone tried to shaft him as bad as Con did. And of course it's an opinion, but I think they've paid a very good but fair wage for him - he's a good pickup for a new team.

Yes Con, your HAL captain, regular first-team performer, and fringe HAL international deserves more than $100k, you nonce.

Matt Thompson may relinquish Jets captaincy after decision to leave
By Liam FitzGibbon
November 20, 2009 Matt Thompson could be stripped of the Newcastle Jets captaincy after announcing he will leave the club at the end of the season.

Thompson, one of the Jets' greatest servants with a record 106 appearances, has confirmed he will be leaving the club after failed contract negotiations.

The versatile 27-year-old has reportedly received offers from two other A-League clubs, including new franchise Melbourne Heart, which the Jets have not been able to come close to financially.

Jets coach Branko Culina said Thompson would now be under more pressure to hold his spot in the team and he also cast doubt over his future as captain for the rest of the season.

Thompson will lead the side out against Wellington Phoenix at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Sunday but Culina refused to guarantee he would keep the armband beyond that.

"I have no issue with Thommo leaving, every player has the right to do what's best for them," Culina said.

"As long as he does the job on the weekend for us, he will be considered every week just like every other player.

"Thommo will be under more scrutiny now because of what has transpired and he has to be strong enough and good enough to be able to rise to the occasion."

The Jets suffered a blow ahead of the match with English striker Michael Bridges ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Culina is hopeful Sean Rooney will overcome a quadriceps injury in time to be considered as a replacement, though he must also decide whether to stick with the same attacking formation used in the win over North Queensland Fury.

The Jets also have young gun Ben Kantarovski back after he helped the Australia under-19s side qualify for the 2010 Asian Championships.

"We're disappointed to be losing Bridges but we're very pleased about the options available to us," Culina said.

We made an offer last time his contract was up but he chose to stay a scummer.

The difference this time is that had a verbal agreement with the Mariners but went back on it.
