Jets keen to give Italian Northern exposure

ITALIAN playmaker Marcello Fiorentini will make his first appearance for the Newcastle Jets against the best from the Northern NSW State League at Darling St Oval tomorrow night.
But Jets fans will have to wait another fortnight for a look at Chinese striker Zhang Shuo.

Zhang will play his final game for Indonesia Super League club Persik Kediri on Friday before returning to China where he will wait for an Australian visa to be processed.

"Visas are never straight forward, but we do not anticipate any issues," Jets chief executive John Tsatsimas said.

"He has to go back to China but he should only be a couple of weeks."

That will leave the 26-year-old front man just a trial against NSW Premier League outfit Rockdale City (July 28) to press his claims for selection in the A-League opener against Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium on August 6.

The Jets take the Northern NSW Select side tomorrow night, Sydney United on Sunday - which doubles as a star-studded farewell match for former Socceroo Zeljko Kalac - Central Coast Mariners on July 22 and Brisbane Roar on July 25.

The clash against the Mariners, a morning game at Ray Watt Oval, replaces a hit-out against Marconi.

After spending two weeks on trial last month, Fiorentini arrived back in Newcastle on Thursday.

He did not play in the 2-1 win over Melbourne Heart but coach Branko Culina, who also missed the opening trial, said Fiorentini would get an opportunity tomorrow night.

"People like Marcello will certainly get a game," he said.

"Kaz [Patafta] and Sash [Petrovski], who missed out on the trip to Melbourne, will get a go as well.

"The only players who probably won't be used this week are Jobe [Wheelhouse], Tarek [Elrich] and Ruben [Zadkovich].

"They are back on the park and looking terrific, but we don't have to push it. If we give them an extra week of training they will be right for the Central Coast and then Brisbane Roar.

"What we want to do is give everyone a fair go over the next few weeks so we create that competition in the team, and also to find out what kind of depth we really have.

"At the moment it looks like we will be miles better off depth-wise than we have been for a while. Again, until you play these games and see everyone you won't know fully."

Fiorentini's arrival, combined with the presence of Kasey Wehrman and Zadkovich, has given Culina plenty of options in the centre of the park.

"It is looking good at the moment in midfield," Culina enthused.

"We have Kasey Wehrman with his experience. Ben Kantarovski has come back [from the off-season] like a new signing. Ruben is shaping up well.

"I'm really excited about Jobey to see if he can continue off from last year, and there is also Marcello.

"It is going to be very competitive for them. As a coach it is very exciting."
