Mariners sign Cahill

Hes no relation to Everton and Qantas Socceroo star Tim, but South Coast midfielder Lachlan Cahill has signed on with the Central Coast Mariners as an injury replacement for Shane Huke.

Cahill arrives at Bluetongue Stadium following stints at Millwall, Norwich and last seasons League Two playoff winner Gillingham in the English lower leagues, and comes highly rated, after representing Australia at Under 17s level.

While it is unfortunate Wolry Wolfes time here wasnt as successful as he or us would have liked, it gives Lachlan a great chance to come in and prove to us what he has got, said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

Lachlan is held in very high regard by a lot of this countrys leading football people, and this is a great chance for him to prove himself at this level.

Cahill was raised in the South Coast town of Kiama and came through the junior representative ranks before gaining his first chance with Wollongong Wolves. After moving to the US where he starred in the highly competitive college system with Coastal Carolina University, the 23-year-old tried his luck in the UK.

A left sided midfielder, Cahill is sure to give Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna another option on that side of the field.

It gives us a chance to look at him over the next two weeks, said Lawrie McKinna.

Hes come in over the last two weeks and done OK at training. Hes just come back from the UK on trial, so its up to him now to show us what hes got, and see if he can become a big part of the squad.

Hes a good passer of the ball, a good crosser, and we dont have a lot of cover for that side of the field, so it will be interesting to see how he does.

Cahill has played alongside many of the Mariners current stars at various levels in the past, and is keen to show his wares after impressing during a trial period.

I just got a text message saying Central Coast Mariners were interested, so I was buzzing, said Cahill.

Started off in the Illawarra and was lucky enough to make some New South Wales squads, went to the (Australian) Institute (of Sport) and made the Australian Under 17s. I know a lot of these boys, Pedj (Bojic) was 10 minutes north of me ever since I started playing representative football, Nigel Boogaard, Alex Wilkinson, I know a lot of the boys, and they are all a good bunch of blokes.

I was at Millwall for about two months and did quite well, but they were flying at the time and youve just got to be in the right spot at the right time.

I was a little rusty last week, I wasnt too happy with myself, but Ive felt better today, and Im sure Ill get better. Im just glad I got over the line, and I just have to keep working hard, Cahill said.

More likely highly rated the way Jedi was if it is coming from the Australian teams, or days of the NSL with wolves.

Wasn't Huke playing in conference premier, league two is a higher level.

From an old article on the 10 best players outside the a-league

Lachlan Cahill
Age 22
Club Wollongong Wolves
League NSW Premier League
Position Left-sided midfielder/defender

A natural left footer? Thats akin to discovering gold in the current Aussie football landscape. And according to Wolves coach John Turner, Cahill is also good enough for the A-League.

Hes the first one on the teamsheet, the long-time NSW Premier League coach tells FourFourTwo. And as well as sharing the same surname as Socceroo royalty, Cahill also has an interesting background. He was part of a very good Joeys squad of 2003 before returning to Australia in the dying days of the NSL.

Cahill briefly joined Sydney Olympic playing alongside Iain Fyfe and Troy Halpin but the long wait for the A-League prompted some drastic action. A two week trial at Dundee didnt work out but an offer of a scholarship to a US University was a different challenge. It was the best thing he ever did.

My games improved incredibly in the three years over there. It is extremely competitive, the 22-year-old stresses. After a few months, I became like the Americans. They say in America, if youre second, youre a loser and its this attitude throughout the NCAA Division.

I was coached by Shaun Docking at Coastal Carolina University, whos this tough British coach. There are a lot of foreign players in the league and its very structured. Its like playing for a professional club with training and the games.

Cahill suggests the best collegiate teams would challenge the best in the state leagues. However, he returned to his hometown Wollongong to play for the Wolves earlier this year. In the back of his mind though was the hope of something bigger.

I just need a chance. Im pretty confident I can do it but I just need that chance to prove myself in the A-League.

Oh, and did we mention hes a natural leftie? Form an orderly queue here A-League scouts.
