As expected......

Young Mariner snapped up by Sheffield Utd
January 14, 2011 - 1:01PM

Central Coast youngster Marc Warren will leave the A-League club this week after signing a two-year deal with English Championship side Sheffield United.

The 19-year-old has not yet made his A-League debut, but Sheffield were suitably impressed with the talented left-back during a two week trial recently.

Mariners coach Graham Arnold has no doubt Warren will be able to transition successfully into the English competition.

"Waz is a fantastic kid," he said.

"He always puts 110 per cent in at training and loves his football. He's great to have around the squad and I'm sure his football talent will only improve being around such a professional setup as Sheffield's."

Warren sees the Sheffield deal as a positive step for his career.

"It's an amazing opportunity," he said.

"I learned so much just during the two weeks I was there and I can't wait for this experience."

The two clubs share a close relationship, having seen the likes of Trent Sainsbury and Andrew Redmayne trial with the English club.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for Marc and I know he is really excited," Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull said.

"I'm delighted that our relationship (with Sheffield) continues to strengthen."

Good luck to the kid, step forward Jerry Kalouris, as this 'strengthens' our relationship with Sheffield United did we or will we be receiving a fee?

Its called a reciprocal relationship.

Sheffield get all of our promising young players and we get .... hmmm .... what do we get ?

I'd like to say that we get some of their players in return for our services but the sad fact is, I think SUFC see the very fact that we have a window into English Football as reward enough and probably dont feel like they owe us anything...

OH but they did give us Nicky Travis...who probably felt shafted by them and felt he was too good to be playing in our lowly league, hence the on-field bitchness!

Perhaps we need to raise our profile a bit more so that getting sent to the Mariners from SUFC doesnt make the players feel like rejects? Sigh

As it has been stated before the relationship is not purely a football one. The two owners of the clubs are involved in property developments together and see this as a way of building that relationship.
We have had 3 Sheffield players come to the club and not one has made it. Travis, Wolfe and Quinn.

The fact that Travis didnt even stand-out immensely in our team let alone the A-league should of dialled his ego down a little but it didnt, in my opinion Glinch is twice the player Travis ever was and he loves it here!

I believe Mckinna made an exception to his no dickheads policy with Travis in a desperate attempt to add some tactical ability and technique to our squad.

I fear our relationship with SUFC is always going to be one way, we will give them our best and the local boys eyes light up with the chance of playing in Europe....sadly its the exact opposite for anything coming the other way, from now on known as "Travis Syndrome"

Im too good to be here etc etc

Spread the word "TRAVIS SYNDROME"

Travis was never as good as weeMac .... and he was a cancer to our club and every club he has been at ... why did SU send him to us...

Hope there is a plus side for us out of this...

Hey...
I'm happy!
I mean we lose a good prospect in Warren.
But this is a positive (especially if he makes a name over there) (i'm a bit doubtful)
Think about it...
Now we've had 3 players invited for trials...1 player earning a contract.
The Mariners provide a gateway through to English Football
Couple this with our belief in playing youth (Ryan, Amini, Sainsbury etc.)
I think this would be very useful on the negotiating table.
Who doesn't want the chance to strut their stuf in England for 2 weeks.
Hopefully this 2 weeks invite is an annual thing for say our 2 brighest prospects.

If it means we get more *QUALITY* youth players...then its going to quite beneficial for the Mariners long term.
Unless ofcourse Sheffield United take every one of them, with no compensation
(I would love to just know the exact specifics of the relationship)

IMO Travis was a good player & wasn`t given a chance with us (for whatever reason). He certainly had some talent & under the right circumstances he could have been beneficial to us.

the difference is that Travis was not wanted by Sheffield, we signed Warren to a two year contract which still has a year to run so the question is what do we get for his breaking of contract - a fee? or a percentage of a sign on fee if he is transferred to another club, or are we paid on number of first team appearances or are we just happy that somewhere down the track we 'produce' other players for Sheffield which makes us feel good? The CoE has to make money, one way is to sell players, so Sheff Utd may get a cut of that (or their chairman)to match their investment but I fail to see why we don't get compensation now as I doubt we are flush with cash, esp with gates down. But then,I sincerely wouldn't try to tell Peter Turnbull how to make money...

With him under contract, small as it may have been, I hope that we at least get a percentage of any future transfer fees.

As for players coming here from Sheffield .. they need to understand that the relative levels of the first grade competitions are similar and they a ) have to be good enough to cut it here and there, b )they come here to learn - about football played in a different style, different climate, and about themselves.

Best of luck to Warren, wish him the best. You would think we would receive a transfer fee of some sort considering he had a contract with us.

On the Nicky Travis- his skill level was good but his ego far outstripped it. He felt he didn't have to prove himself and that was his problem but in saying that he is currently unsigned to a club to the best of my knowledge (wikipedia), that could say something about it.

Nicky Travis in the current squad would have carved. Pity his demeanor was poor and was his own downfall!
