Hearts striker John Sutton seems likely to join the Mariners on loan. If he is anything like his big brother - former Celtic go-to man Chris Sutton - then we're in for a real treat!

John Sutton Set For Central Coast Mariners

HEARTS striker John Sutton is set to complete a shock move to Central Coast Mariners, according to reports in the UK.

The former Motherwell and Millwall frontman is reported to have finalised a deal to quit the Scottish Premier League for a move to Gosford, believed to be on a four month loan deal.

English-born Sutton would come in to replace Matt Simon whose imposing presence has been badly missed in the Mariners side since he left for Chunnam Dragons in the K.League at New Year.

Sutton, 28, is said to have rejected a loan move to his former club St Mirren and Hibs were also said to be keen on recruiting the younger brother of former Celtic great, Chris Sutton.

However he and Hearts are now believed to have opted for a move Down Under.

The Mariners' table-topping spot in the league and Asian Champions League football were also said to be deciding factors in the decision, as well as Hearts' reluctance to let him go to an SPL rival.

Sutton has struggled to hold down a place in an erratic Hearts campaign since moving from Motherwell at the start of the season and was told he was free to leave the club "for the right price"

However given the Mariners's precarious finances at the moment, it's unlikely they would be able to offer Hearts a transfer fee.

Yesterday, sources close to the Hearts camp suggest the move was now close to completion, subject to paperwork, on a four month loan deal.

I`ll go with Arnie on this one, but as Sainsbury said
" it`s about lifestyle too".
Once Sutton has had a taste of life on the Central Coast he`ll be paying us to stay... :eek:verhead:

Could be a huge result!

He could be as good if not a fair bit better than Matty.

Really looking forward to seeing if he is quality....schoolboy international....tipping he is.

I'll be happy if he's not like the Chelsea version of his brother.

Pretty happy we're addressing a need on loan rather then committing to anything long term.

It was first reported on the 26 January, that Australian A-League club Central Coast Mariners were one of several clubs interested in acquiring Sutton on a loan deal. Other clubs that were believed to also be interested were St Mirren and Hibernian FC[53] The Mariners soon entered into discussions with the player, in the hope of securing him on a 4-month loan as a replacement for recently departed striker Matt Simon, and hoping to fill the void left by youth international Bernie Ibini-Isei who will be joining up with the Australian U-20s.[54] On the 31 January 2012, it was announced that the move had been finalized pending international clearance

Will he fit outside our "no dickheads" policy?

Or will we be happy for him to bang the goals in for four months and not worry?

.....and when are the mariners going to announce the signing?

Sutton set to leave Hearts for loan deal Down Under

Published on Thursday 2 February 2012 02:16

John Sutton last night agreed to join Australian side Central Coast Mariners on loan from Hearts.

The deal will see the 28-year-old spend the next four months Down Under, keeping him with the Mariners until the end of their domestic season in April and the conclusion of their Asian Champions League group stage matches in May.

Yesterday evening, Hearts and their A-League counterparts were waiting for the relevant paperwork to clear before the player’s move could be confirmed.

Sutton endured a stop-start campaign at Hearts after arriving at the club from Motherwell last summer, scoring three goals in 18 outings.

The player was reportedly told he could leave the club last month amid financial turmoil at Tynecastle but, despite concrete interest from St Mirren, Hearts appeared reluctant to release Sutton to an SPL rival.

However, the Edinburgh outfit struck an acceptable deal with the Australian outfit.

Sutton represents Hearts’ third major departure of 2012, following Eggert Jonsson and Ryan Stevenson out of the club. While not the mass exodus of senior stars some expected, it does leave manager Paulo Sergio with a pool of strikers containing just Stephen Elliott, Gary Glen, Gordon Smith and rookie David Smith – all of whom have a combined total of four goals in maroon this season.

The Mariners are currently ten points clear at the top of the A-League, and will compete in the Asian Champions League later this year.

Coach Graham Arnold was desperate to bolster his attacking options for the upcoming challenges at home and abroad, and spectacularly succeeded in his bold move to take 28-year-old Sutton Down Under.

If international clearance is received, the former Motherwell man could make his debut for the Mariners at home to Brisbane Roar on 4 February.

Sutton will join other former SPL stars Liam Miller, Billy Mehmet, Steven McGarry and Grant Brebner in the A-League, as well as former European champion Harry Kewell.

Meanwhile, Rudi Skacel has vowed to fire Hearts into Europe after penning a deal which will see him stay at the Edinburgh club until the end of the season.

The Czech midfielder, who agreed an extension to his contract at Hearts on deadline day, said: “I am looking forward to the next few months. I want to help the club as much as I can and hopefully finish high enough to get back into Europe again.”

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s Scottish Cup tie against St Johnstone, the ex-Marseille and Southampton player added: “We have another home draw and it’s important we make the most of it this weekend, although St Johnstone are a good team and will be a tough opponent.”

Mariners swoop for striker John Sutton
http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/mariners-swoop-for-striker-john-sutton-20120202-1qv92.html

A-League leaders Central Coast have strengthened their title charge by agreeing to the loan signing of striker John Sutton from Scottish Premier League side Hearts.

Mariners coach Graham Arnold said on Thursday the 28-year-old Englishman would arrive in Gosford in the coming days on a four-month deal.

Sutton, the younger brother of former England striker Chris Sutton, was allowed to leave Hearts due to their financial worries but the club was reluctant to loan him to a fellow SPL club.

Arnold said the 188cm former Millwall and Motherwell striker was recommended to him by ex-Socceroos and Rangers defender Craig Moore and he would help offset the recent loss of Matt Simon to Korean club Chunnam Dragons.

Arnold said there was an option for Sutton to stay beyond the loan term while the striker could also use his stint to showcase himself for other clubs.

"The exposure of giving him the opportunity to play in the A-League and also the ACL was very appealing to him," Arnold said on Thursday.

"He comes with a very good pedigree in Scotland and he is a similar player to Matty Simon, someone that can make us play different if we need to play different.

"He comes out with a record of a goal every two-and-a-half to three games in Scotland and we're looking forward to John coming out and adding not only another set of legs but quite a deal of experience for our front line."

Sutton has been something of a journeyman since beginning his football career as a youth trainee with Tottenham but enjoyed fruitful stints with St Mirren and Motherwell.

His most recent stint has been stop-start, scoring three goals in 18 outings for Hearts.

Pending travel arrangements and paperwork, Sutton could make his debut for the Mariners in next week's clash away with Melbourne Victory.

Meanwhile, Arnold said midfielder recruit Stuart Musialik was nearing a return to full fitness after an injury-plagued start to his time with the club.

The former Newcastle and Sydney FC player is yet to make his debut for the Mariners.

"He much stronger, much fitter and doing exceptionally well on the training field and I think it's only a matter of time you see Stuart on the park," Arnold said.
