I think it was something Simon Hill said, I can't remember exactly, but it was basically that young up-coming stars are always being traded around the bigger leagues (in Europe etc) for millions of dollars, and then the A-League teams get offers in the hundreds of thousands.
So it just makes me wonder...
How do our kids measure up against the future stars in Europe etc? Are they comparable at all?
By agreeing to terms of a few hundred grand, is that setting precedence for other kids to be sold lower than their potential value?
Is this something that would gradually turn around - eventually we will be selling our future stars for millions too?
One of the things that gets drummed into us is that we're a development nation - we create the young talent and ship our best of overseas so they can become stars - but if we were getting fair prices for these kids (if in fact they are worth millions) that would be a massive boost to the whole league... we could be more competitive when it comes to player wages, and snagging the bigger stars of the game, maybe even advertise the game to the public.
Thoughts?
