Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Is CCMFC getting a fair price?

I think it was something Simon Hill said, I can't remember exactly, but it was basically that young up-coming stars are always being traded around the bigger leagues (in Europe etc) for millions of dollars, and then the A-League teams get offers in the hundreds of thousands.

So it just makes me wonder...

How do our kids measure up against the future stars in Europe etc? Are they comparable at all?

By agreeing to terms of a few hundred grand, is that setting precedence for other kids to be sold lower than their potential value?

Is this something that would gradually turn around - eventually we will be selling our future stars for millions too?

One of the things that gets drummed into us is that we're a development nation - we create the young talent and ship our best of overseas so they can become stars - but if we were getting fair prices for these kids (if in fact they are worth millions) that would be a massive boost to the whole league... we could be more competitive when it comes to player wages, and snagging the bigger stars of the game, maybe even advertise the game to the public.

Thoughts?

I think it's a general perception that the A-league is not as good as the bigger leagues (such as in Europe)....which is probably a reasonable perception to have. Big league lubs who are scouting will see our players as a bit of an unknown quantity in terms of how they will stack up against stronger opposition. It's not just the A-league though.....there are few players from Asia who are performing well in Europe....perhaps the fact that we are part of Asia and our domestic teams don't really carve up the AFC enforces the perception our comp is weaker than European leagues.
I think things will gradually change as our "product" improves and we eventually get players playing at a higher standard. then the buying price for our players will rise.

. personally i think very few players are actually 'worth' millions ... what they are traded at is a different issue and may not relate to worth at all

. in terms of comparable value ... perhaps there is an argument that we under-sell, but it is a complicated situation. not the least because the 'buying' clubs know how little the guys actually earn here. an 'under'-value could very well be snapped up by a financially struggling club and likewise with regard to the player's salary. the buyers have all the power as far as the a-league is concerned

. consider the values being thrown about for tomi at the moment ... how this compares to what we are paying him and what that would contribute towards the cap. it will take a long time for owners, players and buyers to look at things any differently

. alternatively you can consider the values being thrown about for antonis when he first came on the scene (can't remember anything recently though). from millions to nothing from what i have seen

. but to not answer your question: it is a real chicken and egg situation

this sale price is not a true indication of value, it represents that he only has 4 months left on his contract.

if he had a year or more then anywhere between 1-2 million would be expected. As long as we have a sell on clause i think we did extremely well to get $700k.

. yeah i should have added that players with 'potential' will continue to sign short term deals with the perception /instruction that it will improve their chances of grabbing a move o/s

Important point Scoober. I was hoping for more in the vicinity of a mil for Tommy after the purported QPR bid of 700k... Sell on clause anybody?

My understanding is that 20% of ALL transfer fees go to the FFA, regardless of who the player is. Of that, 5% go to the particular player's junior club(s). I presume this is public knowledge, although (for some unknown reason) it hasn't been widely publicised.

When our young players are signed by the Man U`s & Barcelonas of the world, it will open the doors for other players.
Until that happens we will have to accept the highest bidder.

i'd imagine to get a higher price for your players. you'd need world wide recognition.
winning the asian championship would probably get you that.

I'd imagine we might get more for players who've played more than 24 senior games and have more than 4 months left on their contracts. If Rogic were a veteran of two full seasons with three years left on his contract, maybe we'd see seven figures.

It's worth noting the club appears to have attempted to offer extended, improved deals for him and Ryan at least to either keep them or earn well for their sale, but those offers have not been taken up.

I'm pretty happy with the Sheffield United link. That's how we got Nick Montgomery isn't it?

Links are fine, as long as they are mutually beneficial, and not a 'hostile takeover'.

Ideally we would develop links with ALL clubs that will give us some benefit. Getting too cosy with one Club would narrow our options.
