Former Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg on Central Coast Mariners hit list

FORMER Arsenal attacking midfielder Freddie Ljungberg has been linked with a possible move to A-League premier side Central Coast Mariners for next season.

The Australian has been told an Australian-based representative for Ljungberg has been in discussions with the Mariners for at least the past two weeks regarding him playing in the national competition as the club's first foreign marquee player.

The former Sweden captain, who was capped 75 times for his country, is without a club after he parted company with J-League side Shimizu S-Pulse at the end of last season.

Ljungberg arrived in Japan under an injury cloud and was able to play only eight games without scoring.

Before going to Japan he played eight times for Scottish giant Celtic last season.

While he has managed just 16 games in some 20 months, his Australian representative allayed fears he would not be a viable option in the A-League.

"Far from it. I think he would be a huge acquisition," the agent said. "People should remember that Dwight Yorke had very little football when he went to Sydney FC - and look what he did for the club.

"And look at Harry Kewell. How much football had he managed over the previous few years before he went to Melbourne Victory? He has played nearly every match this season."

Ljungberg made his name playing for Arsenal between 1997 and 2008. He played 216 games and scored 46 goals.

Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull confirmed the club was looking at Ljungberg.

"He could do great things for us as a club, no doubt," Turnbull said. "We have never had a foreign marquee player before."

Mariners coach Graham Arnold said he would have a fit and healthy squad of 22 to choose from for Saturday night's first-leg major semi-final against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

"The spirit is fantastic here at the moment as you would expect," Arnold said.

"The players are jumping out of their skins. There is huge confidence after what we have achieved so far this season.

"Winning the Premiers Plate was a fabulous effort after what we have been through this season. It shows the character and culture of this great club."

Arnold does not believe his players will be under more pressure to perform after they helped grab the club's second Premiers Plate in seven seasons.

"There's nothing between us and Brisbane Roar," Arnold said.

"It will get down to who performs best on the day and who takes their chances."

He said Roar would present many problems, especially through its attacking options.

"When you have a goalscorer like (Besart) Berisha, who had a fantastic season, and (Thomas) Broich then we have to be on our toes defensively," he said. "Thankfully we have the best defensive record in the league with 24 goals against us in 27 games."

Central Coast was rewarded for its stellar season with three players - goalkeeper Matt Ryan and defenders Patrick Zwaanswijk and Josh Rose - named in Professional Footballers Australia's team of the season. Arnold was also honoured, being named the PFA's coach of the year.

Would he be a good signing?

I can understand if people voted no given his last few seasons, but the guy is class. If he is signed to a properly structured contract and he gets a full pre-season with Clarky then I think he would be brilliant.

For the name? Yes

For pure football reasons? Not sure

Got released by Shimizu S-Pulse after one season so not sure if he is washed up. Anyone seen him play in the last two years?

He played at the same club as Alex Brosque.

I think he needs to trial here but just his profile and looks will bring people through the door. Beckham effect.

I'm a no. I'd rather be hunting someone who gives Broich performance on Broich money than someone who in all likelihood gives Mile Sterjovski performance on Harry Kewell money.

The poll questions would suggest otherwise, and we *are* either going to sign him or we're not. I'd rather we didn't.

ok then, let me re-phrase

There are too many variables. He could be brilliant for the development of some of our youngsters yet detrimental to our cohesion and performance. There are positives and negatives and heaps inbetween. Its not a sure fire yes or no.

I'd love a fence sitters choice because i cant bring myself to go either way.

On the fence having not seen him play for a long time. He was great but he might be washed up now. He is probably bald as a badger now so not such if the chicks will be rushing in now Style c.

I can't imagine Turnbull looking at him without Arnie being happy about it. Perez was brought in partly to mentor Amini - this could be aa simlar thing for Rogic. As for his fitness - if Andrew Clark can't get him fit - no-one can.

Structure the contract correctly and you can take a lot of the downside out of the equation.

. i am not a big enough fan of sweden, the epl or apparently world football to comment with any authority ... but the anecdotal evidence suggests his form/fitness may not be appropriate for our first foreign marquee. an article linked elsewhere suggests that arnie will be given the opportunity to choose his marquee - is freddie the guy that arnie would really want?

. there is some merit in having him to help mentor the likes of rogic ... perhaps that is part of the 'retain tommi strategy'? no doubt would help with 'pitching' his next move

. problem will then be how do we fit him in ... the double headed diamond seems enticing - but in all honesty i don't know enough about the guy to comment on where he could/should play and who should make way ... you don't want your marquee cash sitting on the bench

. so i'll take up my place on the fence and let those better placed to make the decision, make the decision

His goals on YouTube make Bergkamp look a genius. I think we'd have to switch to 4-3-3 to accommodate him.

I with the mob he represents a huge risk... the assumption would be a performance based contract...

TBH our policy of developing youth has served us well... however the idea of a marquee to put bums on seats that has an X factor is also mouth watering... where to find and who to fins.... me thinks we could look to South America for a top player from a leading club who has not quite made the move to a top European club..
