I know it's more A League related but talks of a fund for every team to access so ongoing Marquees a possibility here at CCM.

DG: Ultimately we want marquee players at each club.

Lowy admitted that the most critical component of the deal will be the new TV deal, though he said some spending areas – including the start of the centralised marquee fund, and better advertising of the A-League – were more urgent and had to be advanced now.

The marquee fund will initially be a “seven-figure sum” spent on identifying potential recruits and helping clubs to attract them here.

Once the TV deal is completed, and assuming it brings in the revenue, a far bigger sum, equivalent to $1m a club, is being talked about as a likely model, with FFA to take on a far greater proportion of the costs of securing marquees.

This was on the SMH the other day. The way I read it is that all clubs give up a bit. Then there's money for a club to get a marquee player.
So we give up a bit of money for Sydney or Victory to get a marquee. Then we're supposed to get extra gate receipt when that team visits us.

Oh, look there's some flying pigs.......

The notion of each club parting with a small portion of revenue is to soften the blow for one club's hefty investment in a marquee that benefits the entire league. When Sydney FC paid nearly $8 million over two years for Del Piero, rival clubs — in particular those interstate — enjoyed significant spikes in attendances for home games against the Sky Blues while TV audiences also grew across the league.

You don't reckon we traded off the idea that Del Piero was coming to get our big crowd for the 7-2 game? In the end he didn't play, but our numbers that night were vastly inflated.

Our crowds that year were
9,192
15,686
9,084
6,885
6,921
14,591
11,249
8,924
6,774
6,081
18,721
7,221
8,271
10,651

There were 4 bumps - the game that would've been ADP's first game in Gosford (that he didn't play), the NYE game, the derby and the Wanderers' visit when we were battling for the league.

The very idea of ADP playing brought 4,000 more fans to us that night for a game against Sydney than we'd had since the 5-4 game in 2007 (which was a holiday special rescheduled game in a record season for crowds anyway) and 3,000 more than we've had in any other game before or since.

In the first season ADP was with Sydney, attendances for their away matches were nearly 2,000 higher than normal: 15,386 compared to 13,467 for the rest of their existence. They sold on average 2,000 extra tickets for their hosts.

That dropped off in the second year, but that meant about 30,000 extra tickets sold for the league on top of what Sydney made.

Marquee players (if they're big enough) can definitely sell tickets to away matches as well as home matches.

As you say marquee players can sell tickets if they're a big name. I would have no way of checking figures but I'm not sure people are flocking to see Luis.
ADP was a popular player to watch. For the 7-2 game I had one extra with me. It would have made no difference who was playing. He would have gone anyway. Would we have got that many extra at a 5 pm KO on a stinking hot Sunday afternoon? I doubt it.

I'm not keen on the Mariners giving up money for the likes of WSW, FC, Victory etc getting a marquee, who may or not play when they visit us.
The Tele article doesn't suggest that same way of thinking anyway.

So no I don't think it's a good idea for the Mariners to put $x into a fund to pay for a marquee player for other A league clubs in the hope of getting $Y back
in people through the gate. Let's face it those marquee players will be heading for Sydney & Melbourne not the Central Coast.

Why do assume that the Mariners won't get any benefit from the marquee fund?

Exactly what MC may want, he has changed his thoughts on Marquee and if there is a possibility to tap the fund it could be the difference especially in year 2 or three when the pool becomes substantial if the TV money comes in.

Also sponsors may be more attracted to the league if it can boost attendances and TV ratings.

E.g. If Syd got another ADP we might be able to attract an away shirt sponsor for that game.

As much as some don't like it, high profile marquees can put bums on seats that players of the caliber of Fornaroli don't do despite him breaking the goal scoring record.
