Fans to crack 500,000
THE marriage between the Central Coast Mariners and their fans is expected to reach another anniversary tomorrow with the 500,000th fan at a home fixture.
Heading into tomorrows match, the combined Bluetongue Stadium attendance for each of the Mariners 51 competitive fixtures since May 7, 2005, is 490,410.
Fans Mitch Chivers and Simon Fisher havent missed a home game.
By chance, Mr Chivers moved back to the Central Coast when the home side started and even met his girlfriend at a Mariners clash.
He lives virtually across the road from the stadium and cant see himself living anywhere else.
I tried. I moved to Sydney and couldnt handle being so far away, Mr Chivers said.
We lasted nine months in Sydney.
The world revolves around the Mariners, he said. Ive quit a job because they wanted me to work on a New Years Eve and Ive missed an engagement party.
Mr Fisher, of Sydney, said his wife and children were very understanding.
My wife is great value, he said.
She knows that its for seven months of the year, one day a week.
Mr Chivers said most people realised they were passionate - but not everyone.
My mum thinks Im a bit bonkers, he said. But she hardly ever misses a game.
CENTRAL Coast Mariners football manager Lawrie McKinna said the relationship between the fans and the team was one of the secrets to his sides success.
Its such a good environment weve got - its like a marriage, McKinna said.
We have a line, but its a good relationship.
McKinna said he appreciated the dedication of many fans.
We know the ones who are here every week, he said.
Its good as a coach to know youll have that core group there.
Long-time fan Mitch Chivers summed up the respect between the fans and the club.
Coasties get behind coasties, he said. Thats what they are to us - thats what theyve become.
