Socceroos to face Ireland in friendly
March 3, 2009 - 1:19AM

Australia will face the Republic of Ireland in a friendly at Limerick's Thomond Park Stadium in August, it was announced on Monday.

It will be the first time Ireland have played a senior international game in Limerick and the first time the recently redeveloped home of Munster Rugby has hosted a major football fixture.

Giovanni Trapattoni's Ireland, currently level on points with Italy at the top of World Cup qualifying Group 8, will use the friendly - scheduled for August 12 - as preparation for their vital qualifier against Cyprus in September.

Australia have several World Cup qualifiers of their own in the Asian section before then.

They face Uzbekistan on March 31, travel to Qatar on June 5 and then host Bahrain and Japan on June 9 and 16.

John Delaney, chief executive officer of the Football Association of Ireland, said: "I am very happy to have reached this agreement with Thomond Park Stadium.

"I thank the stadium's management and Board for their foresight in opening up Thomond Park to other sports, which will enable us to bring senior international football to Limerick for the first time.

"Thomond Park is a great sporting venue and we look forward to an exciting game against Australia in August."

Awesome news!
We will need to play some of these top nations in friendlies after we have qualified for South Africa to keep match fit and the dream alive of winning the World Cup.

Ireland are a solid team equal on points with Italy in qualifying. Robbie Keane and Shay Given are there best 2 players. Majority of there squad play in the EPL or SPL which means they play top level football week in week out.

interesting question - will they be allowed to sell spots on the terraces (that ground has east and west stands but terraces in front and at the ends)? it's a friendly rather than a continental or fifa match, but it's still an international.

There are a shitload of airlines that hop cheaply from Liverpool, Manchester, East Midlands or Leeds to Ireland, but the match isn't in dublin so you'll have to sort the further legs too, remember.

OT - WTF you doing in Barnsley?

Doing us all a favour  :p

First last nights little effort about leaving Level 5 and now this...... don't take out your frustrations at being a Boro fan on me pal.  ;)

TBF last nights question was a legitimate one that was in the public interest as to the accuracy of the article ;)

As to being a Boro supporter, life is fairly good this week, something must of massively fecked up cosmically but we will take it.
