Aloi$i: The $1.4M man, a mere shadow of his former self?

Aloi$i: The $1.4M man, a mere shadow of his former self?

Let me start by reiterating, John Aloisi is one my favourite all-time Australian players. Last season was an absolute dream having him in the Mariners uniform and I was bitterly disappointed he took the money and ran to Sydney FC.

In my humble opinion, Aloisi was a great signing for us last season. He brought charisma to the team, a "star quality" along with his seven goals. Yeah, he misfired in some big matches, but every goal poacher has those games.

In back to back games for Sydney, he has come off the bench ... John Aloisi has been humbled it's fair to say. In his wildest dreams, I don't think he would ever envision coming off the bench for an A-League club (barring a return from injury).

I have made an effort to watch all of Sydney's games this season if only to keep an eye on Aloisi - again, in my humble opinion only - he looks a mere shadow of his former self. He looks off the pace.

One goal in what, seven games? It isn't my concern, but it ain't good enough for one of Aloisi's quality and I wonder what the future holds for Johnny A.

Sydney FC will expect a LOT more from their marquee player in the second half of the season, if doesn't start slotting them in, I can see some drama at The Cove.

He a pretty ordinary scoring record at club level .

Before coming to Australia, he averaged a goal every 4 games or so (http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=11202)

We changed our whole system to accommodate him and SFC dont seem to have done so.

Yes, a $1.4m misfit because (probably) some marketing f**khead at SFC thought he was the magic answer to 4 years of alienating most of greater Sydney and f**king up their head start.

He has done nothing for their crowds and nothing for their team

Agree Greenpoleffc.

Whatever the justification was for the HUGE outlay by Sydney FC has left some "good football judges" with egg on their face thus far. I see him doing a bit more in the second half of the season though it won't be enough to validate the $1.4M price tag.

He scored a fair few at Portsmouth, keeping them from dropping to the third tier (then known as Division Two).

Then scored twice in Coventry's only-ever League win at Villa Park, which means a lot to their fans.

At Osasuna, he didn't score a lot but they were a very defensive side at the time and didn't score much anyway.

Loloisi........ honestly, "take the money and run" has never been more appropriate.

Correction: It's "take the money and NOT run" and therein lies the problem.

Like the OP I have respect for Aloi$i and the way he lifted the Mariners profile last season and his professionalism in dealing with our community, by signing autographs, quick chats to kids, all the good PR stuff.

I also suspect he played a number of games with a bung knee for us too, and the off season operations he had probably didn't set him up for a good season at the Blingers.

But it was important to him, when he made the decision to come back to Australia, to put his good foot forward and show everyone he was worth a chance with. So the Mariners got the first, and probably, best bite of Aloi$i's playing as a result.

I guess by now, he has had a chance to sneak a look at the gnashing of the teeth over at the Cove's forum and realise they are not at all happy with his tenure to date.

The only way he can turn this around, IMHO, is to shut the f**k up, get his head down, keep as fit as possible, be the great team player he is capable of being & when he gets a run on the field, make the most of it.

At the moment Kosmina is trying to stir him up with benching and all the humiliation that comes with that, for someone so senior and highly paid.

At his age, if Aloisi cannot overcome the current predicament he finds himself in, there isn't another club that would want him on even a tenth of the $$ he's earning with the Blingers. In fact, if he fails at Sydney, he'd be better off retiring.

Worst part(for them) is some of the players who could have gone to sydney, and would have drawn crowds, but they went with loloisi

I reckon $1.4mil might get you someone who is not only high profile but actually likely to engage the football public in Sydney who dont have anything to do with SFC (most of them).

Forget winning hearts and minds of the non football but did watch the WC and know who JA is crowd and go after the people who are already into the game but "feel" marginalised.

So if their ploy was to pay $1.4M for JA as a marketing initiative for the Sydney FC it has not worked, they have only been averaging 13K per game. Last year they were around 20K.

Either way they got him for his boot or their marketing scheme it has back fired.

It's not our money he is taking. Rob em blind aloisi ;)

At the moment Matty is more likely to get a call up for the roos so no real need to put him under the balcony of truth.

No, it seems like he hasn't helped there. They have to give tickets away to get their crowds. :p
It's a pity, because I did like him...
Maybe he has just hit his peak??? How old is he???
