Graham Arnold said in the press conference that he is likely to pretty much use his whole squad during this period.

My hunch is that he will send a second eleven to Perth midweek and if it does not have a bearing on positions a second eleven to Gold Coast midweek.

Gunna be a frantic month and enjoy the ride!!!

It will be interesting to see who he rests, will McBreen get another chance starting? Or will GA just rotate through Matty, Baird, Kwas? Depends how Baird plays in the next few games I guess.

I'm sure Perez will be rested at some point (I'm sure the Perth game will see a few guys miss). Amini to cover that.

Bozanic and McGlinchey have played virtually the whole season - will they get a rest or play through?

Will Doig get a start?

Many interesting teams to come up. I just hope we don't lose our rythym come finals time

That's where I differ. While I am happy with where we are, I think there has only been a couple of halves of football when we have found our rhythm and 'clicked'. Ryan has been great. The defence and Griffiths have been solid. Our fullbacks and wide players have combined well. Amini has been a gem. Perez has had flashes and Matty and Kwas have been putting goals away.

The different components are working well, but as a team, it is just slightly out. However, I don't think the side is anywhere near their potential. This is not meant to sound negative. We are sitting third with a good chance of finishing second and I think we are only at 70%.

The only thing missing is the classy, skilful, intelligent forward to play off Matt Simon and to link the midfield - Michael Bridges, Paul Ifill, Robbie Fowler etc etc. Imagine if we had a forward with the skill of McGlinchey or Perez! Unfortunatley it's not Baird or Kwasnik.

As for using the whole squad - would like to see Warren get a run, would like to have an idea of the ability of Gallagher esp with Sainsbury going and possibly Doig, will Hendo get a token games as thanks for his patience? Will he use youth team players - Ibini-Isei, Duke, Fitzgerald, Ormsby, Mallia? And what a luxury to have Amini to call on!Whislt I don't like the idea in principle it will be very interesting to see fringe players get a go

Ok so something to the effect of...

---------------------------Ryan/henderson

Pedj/Sainsbury----Wilko/Gallagher??Ormsby??----Dutchy/Doig----Rose/Warren

-----------------------------Griffiths/Hutch

-- ---------Weemac/Mallia??---------------------Bozanic/Lewis

------------------------- ----Perez/Amini

--------------Simon/McBreen/Baird-----Kwas/Bernie/Duke

Sooooo... who wants to play?

How many players would people rotate in at a time and when?

*Wed 12th jan v Roar (Home)

*Sun 16th jan v Jets

*Wed 19th jan v Perth

*Sun 23rd jan v SFC (Home)

*Sat 29th Jan v AUFC

*Fri 4th Feb v MHeart

*Wed 9th Feb v GCU

*Sun 13th Feb v Jets (Home)

Thats an average of a game every four odd days with 3 at home and six away. There's travel to account for, with perth as the big one... but at least there's no trips to Welly or Nth QLD and two of those games - SFC and JETS are local.

Thoughts people?

I think we need to be at full strength for Home games, Adelaide and Jets. Gold Coast may need it also out of necessity for a top two berth.

So that leaves Perth (keep most of the squad on the east coast?) and the Heart game (which will be tough with a weakened side). If we can snatch two points out of them and win at least 3 of the others (another 11-14 points), we're still a good shot at top 2.

Our game against Adelaide looks like the one which will decide 2nd, I would say that we are favourites for 2nd at the moment (we're 4 points ahead of GC and have 3 games in Adelaide)

Will be very close come end of the season

The Perth mid week game is the one that will knock us around more than any other, simply because of the travelling time and flight schedules (ever caught the red-eye back from Perth? It's a killer!). It's not just a case of giving players an early mark at the 60th minute or so, I'd prefer that they not make the trip in the first place.

I'd definitely leave Perez at home and give Amini a full game. I'd also consider leaving Dutchy at home, not because he's not up to it, I'm just worried about his age and his recovery time. He's so vital to our sides fortunes right now and I dont want him to burn out.

Dutchy is the best. Considering we have Doig to replace him, dutchy should be rested for some of these games, same with Perez. Almini will do fine.

Considering the fact that
a) Fitzgerald made his debut last season
B) Is doing well in NYL
I think he would be a more appropriate WeeMac backup IMO
Mallia is unluckuy to be in a position we have well covered!
(left wing)

Interesting to see the bench he uses.
Sometimes coaches when they rest players, will keep them on the bench as an insurance policy!
This is the part where I am annoyed. A 4 man bench isn't enough!

Thoroughly agree on A league bench Kareem.
It is also handicapping the development of youth in our league - there are many situation throughout a season - be it a lost game - or a comfortable win to tactical changes, where two extra youth players woud be very exciting to ahve on the bench - and great for them.

Such a simple thing. Can someone please tell me what the cons are of changing our HAL bench to six?

Mallia made his debut last season too form memory. But if Fitzgerald is playing RM from all reports, your right he should be the most likely interchange with Weemac.

Anyhow... for now... Surely our full strength squad against Brissy?

I know that one of the reasons they don't want a bigger bench is that the teams have to pay the players more money if they play or make the bench on game day. It's like an extra fee.

Still rubbish though. Need a 7 man bench.

Cons
Now...Say we were allowed a 6 man bench
I'd say Doig and Lewis would be picked?
youth league play Tuesday
Seniors play Wednesday.
Doig and Lewis would miss Youth game, to sit on bench....

Basically in the current system, apart from Gk's, if your on the bench it ensures you get gametime, instead of possibly missing a nice 90 minute match. For young players eg. Lewis, this is particularly important for them to play! For older players...who cares :p

This probably hindered Amini early in the season.
But lately it always esnsured he gets on. If we had a 6 man bench vs Victory he wouldn't have played.
And you'd think if we had a 6 man bench Bernie might have been on it 2 or 3 times (maybe more) already...rarelyplaying...and for someone like him- He simply needs gametime (which he has been getting in NYL ).

Now there is a way to somewhat combat this...The Real Madrid Approach (I'm a madrid diehard)
Lol, don't worry not real madrid of 2000-2009
Real Madrid the last 6 months (25 competitive games)
We have had 6 outfield players from our youth team
Sarabia
Bench= 1, subbed on= 1
Morata
Bench= 5, subbed on= 2
Fernandez
Bench= 1, subbed on= 0
Juanfran
Bench= 1, subbed on= 1
Juan Carlos
Bench= 2, subbed on= 1
Mateos
Bench= 5, subbed on= 2
So that's a total of 15 bench appearances, but only 7 actual gametime appearances.
That's actually pretty nice.

But what's so good about this?
Mourinho has ROTATED his youth players!!! Apart from the 2 regular gun players (Morata- a striker, and Mateos- a defender), he has given other players a 'random' chance off the bench.

So in short, with a 6 man bench I think we could do

This week give, Fitzgerald and Bernie a sitting.
Next week Lewis, and Duke.
Etc.
That way they dont miss out on a great deal of gametime

Also another con? Transportation? Especially around a big ass country like ours?

I think the pro's of a larger bench easily outweight the cons.
But maybe I'm not as smart as the braniacs at the FFA!

PS. Sorry for going sort of offtopic! :lol:

I think with so many games in such a short time the pressure will be on Clarkey as much as anyone.

It`s his job to monitor the physical fitness, awareness & fatigue of the players & advise Arnie.

I`m sure he`ll have a lot of late nights, the same goes with the physio`s.

its kind of silly though. We have an insanely short season, yet so many midweek games?
Realistically if we took out the midweek games, it would extend the season by 1 month or so.
Thatwould then increase the quality (less fatigue), increase player's interest (nobody likes a short season), as well as the pathetic midweek crowds. (I'm expecting 4500-5500 tonight!)
Sure it puts us a bit more in competition with the footy codes, but i don't care.
And if it's a difference of a 4000-5000 midweek game crowd, or a poor weekend crowd (which would still be 4000-5000 you'd think), then wat's the fuss?
